Teaching Series

The Gift, The Word & You

Scripture Reference:

Today we wrap up our “Rhythm of Christmas” series talking about the greatest gifts that were ever given.  The title of today’s message may get you wondering what those three have in common, and that’s how we’re going to wrap up this series.

So, without anymore delays…let’s get into today’s message and wrap us this series so that we can get about enjoying another gift…time with our families and loved ones.

Today’s Message:  “The Gift, The Word, and You”

So, what do Jesus, The Bible, and You all have in common?  Well, in my opinion those are the three greatest gifts in the world.  It goes without saying that the greatest gift of all is what God gave us was His Son.  I mean the whole reason we celebrate Christmas is because we found this to be the best date to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the world.

The second greatest gift (I think) is the Word of God.  After all, it’s this book that tells the Christmas story…the original Christmas story.  Before the Grinch, before Toy Story or Home Alone, before Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, and before It’s a Wonderful Life…the Bible told the greatest story ever known to man.

The third greatest gift (again my opinion) is you…actually it’s not my opinion.  God loves you and I so much that before the world was even formed every single one of us was already on His mind.  He thought of the whole story from beginning to end before He began to set the story in motion.  There isn’t any of us who are worthless, useless, or a mistake.  There isn’t one of us that God doesn’t love and value so much that He sent Jesus to die for.

So, now you know that Jesus, the Bible, and you are three of the greatest gifts the world has ever known.

Jesus was born in a simple manger over 2,000 years ago for one purpose: to give everything He had including His life so that we might find new life through Him. As John 1:4-5 says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Here’s an interesting thing.  The Bible says that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  It goes on to say that the Word became flesh and dwelled amongst us.  One day I was thinking about this, and what dawned on me was that this Bible we read…it’s more than just a book or a collection of stories…it really IS the living Word of God.

In other words.  The Bible is Jesus in book form.

Since in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word WAS God…and then you add to it that the Word became flesh and dwelled amongst us.  Jesus is God.  The Word is God.  The Bible is God’s Word.  So…then if you really take a moment to ponder all of that…what comes to your mind is that the Bible is not only the Word of God…the Bible is God in book form.

I’m not going to rehash some things because I went over a lot of this in a few series that I’ve written.  Restart: Leading with Confidence – SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT is one of the messages I’ve written where I talk about this point.  I also mention it in A 30+ Day Why Read The Bible Series by John Piper.

The Bible is the Word of God…and since we know what John 1:1 says…that means the Bible isn’t just another book…it’s much more and that’s why we ought to have a healthy relationship with our Bibles…by abiding in His Word…we abide in Christ.

Jesus was God’s greatest gift to all of mankind. This gift changed the rhythm of everything for all eternity. Watch the beautiful retelling of Christ’s life today and listen to the words of the song.

There’s no debate.  Even if someone were to buy me a Mercedes-Benz like the commercials.  Even if someone were to buy me keys to my very own house. Even if I finally got that winning lottery ticket…nothing that money can buy could ever come close to equaling the value of the greatest gift I have ever received.

Having a relationship with God because of what Jesus came to do in my place so that I could have that relationship is the single greatest thing anyone has or ever will do for me.  My wife is a wonderful gift, my daughter is a fantastic gift, and having the relationships with my family restored are also wonderful gifts…but still none of that equals the gift I received when Jesus became Lord and Savior of my life.

There really isn’t much to add, is there?  I mean if you can tell me what better gift there is then Jesus I’d like to hear it.  The thing is with Jesus the gifts don’t stop when you accept Him as Lord and Savior.  He is literally the gift that keeps on giving.  The Bible says every good and perfect gift comes from above.  That means that accepting the gift of eternal life through Jesus is just the beginning…and since we celebrate this beginning by the beginning of His life on Christmas morning…what else can you say about Jesus then He truly is the greatest gift ever given.

As you watch, think about how Christ gave it all so that you can be free from sin. Ask yourself, “Have I given all of myself to Him just as He gave all of Himself for me?”

So, this brings this message back to you.  Have you received the gift of eternal life through Jesus?  Have you maybe received it, but thought you lost it or worse you tried to return it?

To those of you who thought you lost it…getting it back is as easy as ripping open that first gift on Christmas morning.  If you’ve never received Jesus it is also just as easy.  Either way I feel like now, right now is the best time for you to receive the gift of salvation by grace through faith in what Jesus did on the Cross.

If you’re in the first group who thought you lost or maybe you walked away from Jesus…and you’d like to be like the prodigal son and return home…please take a moment to get somewhere quiet where it’s just you and God…and pray this prayer out loud with all your heart so that the devil can hear you too.

Re-commitment Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, I want to know the real You in all Your fullness and glory like I never have before. I’ve wandered away from You, and have become lukewarm in my walk of faith. I repent for not giving You total control of my life. Jesus, please fill me anew with Your love and peace that surpasses all understanding. Please renew my strength and faith and restore my hope, so that I may know the real You intimately. Lord, I declare You are my Hope and my Salvation, my Rock and Shelter, my Provider and my Healer, my Everlasting Father, and I want to dwell in Your presence and love all the days of my life. Lord Jesus, I trust in Your love and believe in Your Word. Light the fire of Your Holy Spirit again in me so that I may taste and see each day that You are good! I dedicate my life anew to You, my Lord and Savior! In Jesus Name, AMEN.

If you’re in the second groups of people and you’ve never received the gift of eternal life through believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior…then it’s your turn to go and get somewhere quiet with God…and pray this prayer out loud with all your heart so that the devil can hear you as well.

Prayer of Salvation:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins. Right now, I turn from my sins and open the door of my heart and life. I confess You as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen.

Friends, if any of you prayed either of those prayers…you have just received the greatest gift you’ll ever receive.  Welcome to the family, and…well…Merry Christmas.

In Closing:

Well, friends.  This is likely going to be the last message of the year unless God puts something on my heart for a New Year’s message.  I thought I was finished a few weeks ago, but God gave me the liberty and anointing to get into this Christmas series.
