Why Read the Bible? – Day 6 of 32 – Preach the word

Today’s Scripture:  “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” – 2 Timothy 4:2

Is anyone other than me tired of the Prosperity Pimps?  How about the Positive Thinking Doctrine that’s invaded the body of Christ because of ministries like Joel Osteen’s?  I know that the Bible talks about a time where people will have itching ears, and be turned away to fables…but I think the fables have become more like fairy tales.

Have you noticed that the only ones making any money off of the Prosperity Doctrine that is being preached on TBN are the preachers?  Has anyone other than me noticed that it’s getting harder to find good, solid Biblical teaching on television?

Yesterday’s message was about the moral decline of the family…but today’s message is going to be even better.  I believe it’s going to be another one of those that goes away from the message that  the writers of this devotional had intended, but we here at Christlike Ministries NWA believe that if the Holy Ghost wants to go a different direction…we’ll do what He wants…because how many of you know that when the Holy Ghost talks…the messages are better anyways.

Today’s Message:

Once again, I could barely get through the introduction before I realized this is another message that’s about to take a Holy Ghost detour.  So, let’s take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to speak, and see where we go with this message today.

Holy Spirit, we love it when You speak.  Once again, I yield my fingers to You, and ask that You would lead and guide me into all Truth.  I ask, Holy Spirit, that You once again would give me utterance and unction that only comes from the supernatural ability in which You supply.  I thank You that my fingers type only that which You have to say, and I thank You that the Word of God never returns void, and always does that which it is sent out to do.  We ask for ears to hear, hearts to receive, and the courage to respond as You desire us to.  We ask this in Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen

Well, now we’re going to get to the root of what’s behind the moral decline in the Church.  I just recently watched a two-part message by Donnie Swaggart simply titled “Old Paths”.  Yes, I realize that everyone thinks that the Swaggart’s are full of scandal…but as I listened to these messages I was reminded of my lack of fire for the Word of God…and I found myself agreeing with much of what was said.

You see, friends, there was a time when just as I stated that the Bible was the cornerstone of the family it was the authority within the church.  There’s always been winds of false doctrine that has invaded the body of Christ.  Remember Paul basically Galatians to scold believers during Paul’s day that began to accept and try to live out the Judaizers doctrine of salvation by works and faith?  I wish that was the worst kinds of doctrine that are invading the body of Christ today.

However, if you turn on TBN most of the time your going to hear a message from someone preaching about prosperity.  I love that Donnie Swaggart calls these people “Prosperity Pimps” because that’s exactly what they are.  They are trying to sell you everything from oil anointed prayer cloths to a portion of their anointing.  They give out bogus promises that if you sow a seed of this amount your mortgage will be paid or you’ll receive double the seed you sow.  As I mentioned in the introduction…isn’t it funny (not really) that the only ones who seem to be wearing the Armani suits, driving the Mercedes Benz’s, flying in private jets, and are multi-millionaires are the preachers…excuse me…Prosperity Pimps?

Then you turn on a program like Joel Osteen’s.  You here this positive thinking, and living a better life now stuff…and it makes you feel so good.  However, have you ever noticed he’s the only one who has this “better life now”?  I wonder what his father would think if he heard on of Joel’s messages?  I’m betting that John Osteen wouldn’t be happy to hear the garbage that he’s preaching…you know who else isn’t a fan of what Joel’s teaching?  The Holy Spirit.

I could run down the list of doctrine’s that are invading the church, but then I’d get away from the point of this message, and from where the Holy Spirit is going.  So, let’s reign it back in.

The problem in the church is that they have forsaken the Word of God for the sake of church attendance, and making sure they don’t offend people.  Today preachers are more concerned with offending the people in their congregations than offending God, and blaspheming the Holy Spirit…yes…I said misrepresenting the Holy Spirit.

I’ve written several messages on this subject, and the thing that I always come back to is how in the world can you have anything to say if you don’t say it from the Word of God?  Rick Warren’s book is not a topic for Sunday morning service.  It may be a wonderful thing to do in a small group or Bible study, but standing in front of a congregation preaching about the Purpose For Life isn’t going to help them to realize they need Jesus.  It’s not going to confront them about sin in their lives, and it’s not going to get anyone saved, set free, healed or delivered.  It’s just going to be a long drawn out series of messages from a Pastor who wrote a book.

Listen, I’m not saying it’s wrong or a bad idea to read good Christian books.  What I am saying is they have no place being taught as the main subjects in the pulpit of churches unless you have the Word of God to support, illustrate, and back up what it is your teaching.

What ever happened to the Old Paths anyways?  What ever happened to allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide the direction of the services?  What ever happened to preachers who study the Word of God instead of going online for ready-made sermons?  What ever happened to “Preach the Word”?  I’ll tell you what happened.  Preachers have forsaken the Word of God for the sake of church attendance.  How many of you know that the more people who come to your church…the more money you make from tithes and offerings?  Yes…I went there.

I have seen the websites devoted to helping pastors…complete with sermons.  Outlines, notes, illustrations, and yeah…they include scripture…but you read the body of their message…and it’s garbage.  No Holy Spirit.  No passion.  No anything.  Just a published message that you sometimes have to buy from the website.

Oh, Lord, that You would raise up an army of preachers who still believe that the Word of God is just as valid as it was when it was written.  Preachers who don’t think the Word of God is outdated or out of touch with today’s society.  Please, Lord God, raise up preachers, pastors, evangelists and teachers who will get the Word of God back into the pulpits.  Those who still believe it’s okay to do what Paul exhorted Timothy to do…and raise up those who are unashamed to “Preach the Word”.  In Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen

Remember what I told you about going into a house that has a dust ring on the coffee table where their Bible is?  Well, if you should find yourself in a church that’s not preaching the Word of God there’s only one piece of advice that I’m here to give you.

RUN!!! Get out of that church as fast as you can.  I promise that you won’t have to worry about that with Christlike Ministries NWA.

Interactive Study Questions:

I sure hope that you guys are taking the time to at least think about these questions.  I really don’t want this to be just me writing, and you reading.  Anyways, here’s today’s study questions.

  1. What would make the time not favorable?
  2. When it says preach the word, do you think this verse is referring just to pastors?
  3. How are we to preach the word in our lives?

Conclusion & Prayer:

I want you to know that this ministry believes in the Old Paths. This ministry believes the Word of God is just as valid today as it was when it was written. This ministry will continue to preach the Word, and will not be afraid or ashamed to take a stand against the wiles of the devil. We will not be seeker friendly, but Jesus friendly. We will be God’s Word friendly, and it is the Word of God that will continue to direct, govern, and be preached by this ministry.

We are committed to the Word of God.  We are committed to Preach the Word.  We believe the Bible is the absolute authority for our lives, our ministry, and we endeavor to do the best we can to live by it.  It is the cornerstone of Christlike Ministries NWA.

Lord God, we cry out to You today asking You to raise up men and women of God who still believe in the Old Paths.  Raise up preachers, pastors, teachers, and evangelists who still believe it’s hip to Preach Your Word.  Convict those, Holy Spirit that do not, and draw them back…to their first love…to the Word of God, and I would ask Lord that You would remove the lampstands of the churches and ministries who refuse to return to preaching Your Word.  Help us, Lord God, to be able to quickly discern whether a church preaches Your Word or not.  Lord, we love You.  We give You glory, and we thank You for speaking to us this day…in Jesus’ name we pray…Amen & Amen.
