The Goodness of God – Day 1 – (1 John 4:9)

John 13:34-35 KJV1 Corinthians 13:13 KJV and 1 John 4:7-9 KJV

We begin our 7 day study on the Goodness of God with 1 John 4:9. However, I couldn’t help by to add a few verses today because I’m sensing that “Love” is really going to be the topic of the day…because you cannot talk about God’s goodness…and leave out Love…because as we know…God is love.

See…not only is the goodness of God made manifest to us through love, but the goodness of God towards others (through us) is also made manifest through love. Love is the measuring stick in our walk with God.

How do we know love is the measuring stick of our walk with God?

First of all. There is an entire chapter in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13 that talks about love. God is love, and the very root & motivation for everything God is and does is love. Love is more than just an attribute or characteristic…because 1 John 4:8 says very clearly that God IS love. So when we look at God, when we see Jesus (who said if you have seen Me…you have seen the Father), and when we read 1 Corinthians 13 it’s describing God. So…the next time you read the thirteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians try to remember that every thing we read is describing to us who God is.

I know that we have all kinds of other descriptions of God. God is Sovereign, God is Holy. God is Omnipresent, God is Omnipotent, God is Just, and the list goes on. But why is it that God’s always referred to by everyone one of these characteristics…except the one that’s given in 1 John 4:8. God IS Love. The very beginning of His Goodness towards us comes from love, and that is how we share His goodness with the world.

Secondly, staying with 1 Corinthians 13 let’s look at verse 13. Faith, hope, and love…but the greatest of these is what? LOVE.

Why all this emphasis on Love?

Let’s look at what Jesus said in John 13:34-35. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By THIS all men shall know that ye are my disciples, IF you have LOVE one to another.”

The goodness of God is displayed in how Jesus loved us. Jesus is One with the Father. God was in His Son reconciling the world to Himself. God IS Love. If you have seen Me you have also seen the Father. Jesus was God’s love in the flesh…in action…on display for all the world to see. Everything Jesus said & did was out of love…even when He was angry. I said EVERYTHING Jesus said & did was out of LOVE.

Why? Because He was fully God & fully man. God IS love. So the very goodness of God is birthed from who He is.

All the insistence on love is because of what we read in 1 John 4:8…”He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

The insistence of love is because it’s the one thing that all Christians ought to have in common with God, and have on display…whether it’s towards God…towards our loves ones…and even harder…towards our enemies…especially the ones who persecute us.

The world is full of darkness. It’s full of hate, discord, and everything else that is not of God. The greatest thing that we can learn, and do for the world.

I would recommend that you take some time today to really read & meditate upon 1 John 4:7-21. It’s all about the Love Walk…not just from God to us, but also from us to the world.

After all, this is where God’s goodness begins and ends, and if that’s the case then we should know all there is to know about it…so we can make it manifest…and live through Him.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.” (1 Corinthians 16:23-24)
