Why Read the Bible? – Day 11 of 32 – Eternal Life

Today’s Scripture:  “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.”  John 5:39

Intro:

I am having so much fun writing messages for this series.  I feel like I’m getting some really good revelation myself, and I hope that I’m passing that on to you.  I hope that what we do here at Christlike Ministries NWA is helping you, and I really hope that above all it’s helping you to develop a strong & intimate relationship with God.

We have been talking about “Why Read The Bible” for about a week and a half now, and so far I believe the messages have been really good.  Today’s message relates again to the Scriptures having something to do with testifying about Jesus…again bringing us back to what we learned on Day 2…the Bible is about Jesus…and the more we read it and apply it…the more we become conformed to His Image as our ministry verse Romans 8:29 tells us we can be.

So, let’s see what we can learn about the importance of Reading the Bible from today’s message…Eternal Life.

Message:

“These are they which testify of Me.”.  Almost any time we read something from the Gospel’s during this series we find Jesus saying something like this.  Once again referring to the point that the Bible’s main point, main character, and main theme is simply this…Jesus Christ.

He is the point, He is the purpose, and He is the main reason for the Bible being written…and therefore should also be the main reason for the Bible being read, spoken, taught or preached.  The Holy Spirit cannot even testify about Jesus without the Word of God.  So…when you hear Christian preachers talk about the Bible being irrelevant to today’s world…then what they are really doing is denying Jesus Christ.  They are saying that Jesus Christ is irrelevant to the world, and the very fact that they say this proves only one thing…they are preaching from the wrong spirit.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. – 1 John 4:1-6

Friends, we really do need to be diligent to be very careful where we and who we submit ourselves to when it comes to our churches and our pastors.  Any pastor who stands in a pulpit and says that the Word of God isn’t relevant to today’s world…according to 1 John 4:1-6they are of the spirit of the Antichrist, and we ought to run out of that place as fast as we possibly can.

How can I say that?  What does the Word of God say?  “These are they which testify of Me.”.  What are the “these are they”?  The Scriptures.  The Word of God testifies of Jesus Christ because the Word of God IS Jesus Christ.  How many times to I have to write “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 (NKJV).

The Word became flesh…These are they which testify of Me.  In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  How can we read these verses, and then turn around to say to a lost and dying world that is on it’s way to hell that the Bible is irrelevant to today’s world.  Preacher…the Word of God is the ONLY thing that can save this world.  Not your books, not some sermon you downloaded off the internet, and certainly not your opinion.  If you don’t believe that the Word of God is valid and capable of doing that which it’s set out to do…then please do the rest of us who actually do “Preach the Word”…and leave the pulpit.

There are millions of people going to hell because they believe the Bible is irrelevant, and that the next Rick Warren book is going to save their souls from an eternal life of hell and torment and separation from God.  You may believe and preach that Jesus Christ isn’t the only way to Heaven, and if that’s your message then you also need to get out of the pulpit because you’re going straight to hell with them.  You ought to be ashamed of yourself, and know that if Jesus Christ were walking the earth today He may come in turning over your tables, ripping up and burning your novels…and some of you He may even eject from your churches because you are such an offense to Him.

You grieve the Holy Spirit.  You offend God, and all the books your selling won’t matter because you cannot use one dime of that money to buy your way out of an eternal life in hell.  You need to repent, and come back to the Cross.  You need to stop denying Christ, and being ashamed of the Bible.  Listen, preacher, if you’re ashamed of the Bible it’s just like being ashamed of Jesus because Jesus IS the Bible.

Oh, God that we would fall on our faces and turn from our wickedness.  God forgive us for turning our backs upon Your Word, and denying Your Son.  Oh Father, I ask You on behalf of those who are preaching in pulpits around the country and possibly the world that are denying that the Bible has any relevance to today’s society.  God forgive us.  I plead the Blood of Jesus over these pastors and preachers who would rather preach from someone else’s novel then do what Paul said an Preach Your Word.  Draw us back to a place where we are hungry for Your Word, and where preachers return to the Old Paths…and if those that are in pulpits now won’t do it…then I pray in Jesus’ name that You’d raise up mighty men and women of God who will preach the Word…who aren’t ashamed of the Gospel…and who aren’t ashamed of Your Word.  Lord…I ask this in Jesus’ name…in Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen.

Let that be the cry and prayer of our hearts friends and followers of Christlike Ministries NWA.  Friends, I implore you to make time for daily reading of the Bible, and to make sure that you are attending good, solid churches that have the Bible as it’s foundation and authority.  It’s the only way we are going to get this great nation of ours turned around…it’s to come back to the Word of God.

We can find out about eternal life by reading the Scriptures.  We find a little about Heaven in the book of John and chapter 14.  We find out more about the third heaven and what it’s going to be like after the Great White Throne Judgment in the book of Revelation.  We kind of know by looking at the garden of Eden what Heaven is going to be like.  All of us will have the privilege, and ability to talk and walk with God in the garden in the cool of the day.  Our bodies will be perfect, the weather will always be perfect, and we will be perfect.  What an awesome thing to think about that this life is as bad as it is going to get for us that believed and called upon the name of the Lord to be saved.

I urge you to agree with me, and make that prayer I just wrote a prayer of your own.  We need a Word of God revival…that’s what’s going to bring about revival in the church.  Three things we need to return to in the pulpits and ministries of the body of Christ are these…

  1. The Word of God
  2. The Holy Spirit
  3. The Cross

If we can restore those things to the church…then there will such a power surge that the devil and hell will shake which such fury they won’t know what hit them…the devil is terrified of a church that is full of the Word of God, on fire with the Holy Ghost, and always keeps the Cross before them.  There’s power in the blood, there’s power in the Holy Ghost, and there’s power in the Word of God…the power to usher into Eternal Life with Jesus Christ.

Study Questions:

  1. What about the Scriptures gives eternal life?
  2. How have the Scriptures been pointing you to Jesus?

Conclusion & Prayer:

Well, we couldn’t get passed “these are they which testify of Me”.  I think it’s important to make sure that we’re fully aware and have the full understanding that this book that so many preachers feel is no longer relevant to the world in which we live…isn’t just a book.  It’s Alive & Powerful, and it’s the ONLY book like it.  There isn’t another book anywhere that’s quite like our Living Word of God…and I can assure you that this ministry will not ever compromise that point.  We are a Bible believing, Bible reading, Bible teaching and Bible preaching ministry…and there’s never a time where we thought the Bible just isn’t relevant to minister to the needs of this lost and dying and going to hell world…we, in fact, believe the exact opposite…that it’s the only thing that has the ability to save this world…and that’s why we will never stray from it…Amen?

Lord, we again ask You to forgive us for turning away from Your Word for other means.  We know Your Word is alive, powerful, and still very much relevant to the needs of this world today.  We ask again that You’d raise up preachers and teachers who still believe in The Old Rugged Cross, still believe in the power & fire of the Holy Ghost, and still are unashamed to Preach the Word.  I ask God, for a Word of God revival in this world, and that Your name and Your Word would once again be magnified, and be the authority and cornerstone of every American church and family…and eventually once again in our government.  In Jesus’ name….Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible?–Day 10 of 32– Sustenance of the Word

Today’s Scripture:  “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”  Matthew 4:4

Introduction:

Okay.  I know how this looks.  This looks like I wrote yesterday’s message while looking ahead to today’s, but I promise you I didn’t.  We got to this verse a bit yesterday, and now it’s our main text for today’s message.  I’m sorry.  We talked about the Nourishment of the Word of God on Monday.  See, my job has my days all messed up.  Yesterday was pretty good we talked about how the Bible is the only book that is absolutely 100% truth.  It’s totally non-fiction.  It’s dependable, and works for any and all situations in our lives.

Today, we’re back to talking about how it sustains us as believers.  So let’s get right into today’s message…The Sustenance of The Word.

Today’s Message:

The Bible is some times referred to as “fresh manna” from Heaven.  Have you ever wondered (and this is actually one of our study questions) why the Word of God was likened to food?  Remember how we talked about Jesus was and is the Word of God?  Remember how what Jesus said in John 6:47-51?  “am that bread of life…I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”  Jesus went on to offend many of the people because He began to talk about eating His flesh and drinking His blood.

So.  Let’s look at this for a moment shall we?  We all know what we get from drinking His blood, and we also know that His body was broken for our healing.  However, do we realize that Jesus said I am the bread of life…and that the Word of God is considered manna (or bread) from Heaven.  Are you drawing the same conclusion I am?  Every time we read and digest something in the Word of God…we have taken a bite of the flesh of Jesus.  Every time we get fresh revelation of His Word…it’s like eating that “fresh manna” from Heaven.

How do I know this?  Because in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  And…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.  So, if Jesus became flesh…that means the Word became flesh.  Jesus and the Word are both bread…right?  So…the sustainability of the Word of God is also the Author of the Word of God.

Everything in this book is about Jesus.  It’s all about Jesus.  No matter what we do, no matter how we look at it…we cannot get away from the fact that the Bible is Jesus…the Bible is about Jesus…and the Bible is the main thing that sustains us.

Earlier today the Lord gave me this little nugget of gold as I was messing around on Twitter.  He said:  “No Word of God + No Holy Spirit = No Power”  Do we really have to go back over what the Holy Spirit’s job is or can we just re-read yesterday’s message about the Holy Spirit that leads and guides us into all truth…and how the Holy Spirit never ever contradicts the Word of God.  He never acts contrary to the Word of God.

Are you starting to understand why this book we call the Holy Bible is such an important part to who we are, and what we believe.  It’s not just that.  It’s the very life source for our walk with God.  How can we walk in boldness, power, and the will of God if we don’t walk in His Word?  Remember Jesus said I am the vine, you are the branches…abide in Me…get your substance from Me and you will bear much fruit.  However, apart from Me…you can do NOTHING.

Again, I don’t understand why there is such a shock in the Christian community about why there are so many weak churches that have had a power outage for decades.  It’s because they are disconnected from the Vine.  The life blood of who we are is in The Word of God.

“Preach the Word” Paul writes.  Why?  Why is that so important?  Why doesn’t Paul write to preach from Rick Warren or Joel Osteen’s new book?  Why doesn’t Paul write to preach some sermon you downloaded off the internet?  Why doesn’t Paul write…Preach your opinion?  Because the Holy Spirit isn’t going to confirm Rick Warren’s book with signs and wonders following.  The Holy Spirit isn’t going to move based upon a good point that Joel Osteen writes.  The Holy Spirit isn’t going to perform a miracle based upon your opinion or mine.  The Holy Spirit only confirms the Word of God with signs and wonders following.

Take a good look at your church.  Are people being healed or are they always sick?  Are people being set free or are they bound by sin?  Are people getting saved or are they just coming to watch a good performance by the worship band?  Let me give you a hint.  If people aren’t getting saved, healed delivered, set free, or totally on fire for the Lord…there’s a really good chance the Word of God isn’t spoken there…and that means your church has a power outage…and the only way to get it back is to get the Bible open and start reading.

Listen, I am not saying anything against Rick Warren’s books.  I’m sure they are great reads full of good solid wisdom and understanding from a very good and well-known pastor.  However, preaching from his book on Sunday is not going to bring the power of God…the only way to bring the power of God into any service is to “Preach the Word”.

If you want to see your life start to take on some power, anointing, and the ability to do some things…then start reading the Word of God.  Start listening to the Word of God.  Get the Word in you…feed on the Word…eat on it…chew on it…meditate upon it.  I don’t care what it is you do to get more Word of God in you…but do it.

Jesus said that there is sustainability in the Word of God when He told the devil that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.  He’s saying that the Word of God is able to do more to sustain our souls than anything in this world…including food.  Food only feeds the flesh…the Word of God…the living Word of God…the Bread of Life…He says if you eat of His flesh you’ll never go hungry.

I’ll close with this last thought…and maybe you can do some chewing.  In the Be-Attitudes Jesus said…Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.  Are you feeling a little malnourished spiritually?  How long has it been since YOU fed yourself upon the Word of God?

Midnight snack anyone?

Study Questions:

  1. Why would the Bible be compared to food?
  2. How do we get the Bible to be our food every day?

Conclusion & Prayer:

The Word of God is our substance.  It sustains us.  It nourishes us.  It’s so much more than just a book we read.  It’s so easy to overlook how important the Word of God is to the life of a believer especially when so many 88% don’t read their Bibles every day.  That would explain why only a few Christians…12% experience real power in their lives…it’s because they feed upon the Word of God on a daily basis.

Imagine if we ate as often as we read our Bibles.  No there’s some food for thought.

Father, thank You for the sustaining power of Your Word.  Help us to desire more of the Word in our lives.  Help us to understand that this Bible that’s our Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is much more than just a book we read or don’t read when we feel like it…but the very source of power to those of us who read it in some form or fashion every day.  We love You and praise You and glorify You.  In Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen

Why Read the Bible? – Day 9 of 32 – Truth of the Word

Today’s Scripture:  “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”  John 17:17

Introduction:

Well, I don’t know about you, but I feel like this series has been awesome.  The Holy Spirit had a few things to say during a couple of our messages that I still have to go back and read again.  Today, we get into talking about one of the characteristics of the Word of God…it’s truth.

Today’s Message:

Do you know one of the things that I love about the Word of God is it is an absolute true story book that you’re ever going to find.  It is 100% non-fiction.  There isn’t one thing that’s made up, fabricated, or that’s not 100% true.  Is there any other book that you can say that about?  I mean even some of the best history text books while they hold many facts…can you honestly look at a history book and know that everything written in it is true?  That’s what I love about the Word of God.  There isn’t anything that you read in it…and have to wonder if it’s true or made up…it is absolutely untarnished.  There isn’t a mistake, there are no facts that cannot be checked, and there’s never any hint at all that there’s the slightest fabrication in the Bible anywhere.

Do you know what that tells me?  If I ever need an absolutely honest answer about anything in my  life…I can find it in the Bible.  The Bible often describes itself as infallible, inherent, and incorruptible seed.  There’s no spots, no blemishes, and of all the translations through the years…it’s the only book that has NO typographical errors either.  Yes, some of the language of the Bible does bother the spell check, but in all reality…everything is absolutely perfect, right, and true about the Word of God.

So, Jesus said:  “Thy Word is truth.”.  Don’t you know one of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to lead and guide us in ALL truth.  So, really what the Holy Spirit does is lead and guide us according to and by the Word of God.  The Holy Spirit is never going to lead us to do anything that is in compromise or that doesn’t line up with God’s Word.  The Bible…everything the Holy Spirit does is according to the Word…in fact…if you read the creation account in Genesis…you find that the Holy Spirit didn’t move until God spoke.

Remember, the Bible said that the Holy Spirit hovered over the face of the deep.  Then what happened?  God spoke…and the Holy Spirit did what was spoken.  God said let their be light…and the Holy Spirit brought forth light.  God said let there be sea and sky…and the Holy Spirit brought forth sea and sky.  We can go through the entire seven days to see that God spoke…the Holy Spirit did.

So…friends.  Guess what happens when we speak the Word of God over our lives?  That’s right…the Holy Spirit does.  The Holy Spirit confirms the Word.  The Holy Spirit seals the Word.  The Holy Spirit and the Word of God go hand in hand.  You can’t have one without the other…which goes back to the reason there’s a power outage in many of the churches across the United States…they have no Word…and because they have no Word…they have no Holy Spirit.  Basically a spiritually dead church is one that has turned it’s back upon the Word of God.

There may be spiritual manifestations in those churches, but I can guarantee you that it’s not the Holy Spirit.  I know this because the Holy Spirit never…NEVER compromises Himself to act independently of the Word of God.  So, if you’re in a church that isn’t preaching the Word, and there’s spiritual manifestations…then you may want to get out of that church as fast as you possibly can because the spirit that is in operation at that church is not from God.

So, the Word of God is truth.  You can always depend upon it to be honest.  It’s dependable, reliable, and…well…faithful.  Take a moment today to thank God for the Word of God…and thank God that His Word is…well…true.

Study Questions:

I’ve decided since no one actually answers these questions to just make them general study questions to either answer on your own or meditate upon.  Hopefully these questions will enable you to have a better understanding or maybe get you to think a bit more about what you read.

  1. Why is it important that God’s Word is truth?
  2. Why would His truth cause us to be holy?

Conclusion & Prayer:

It is important that God’s Word is truth because that’s how we know that it’s infallible, the we can trust it, and furthermore since God isn’t a man that He should lie…that should give us supreme confidence and faith in the Word of God that it’s always going to do that which it has been sent out to do.  It never returns void.  It never fails.  It never falls short.  The Word of God is an absolute in a world where people seem to think there are no absolutes.  So, when you hear someone say that…you can tell them there is definitely one absolute…The Word of God.

It’s not the Word that causes us to be holy.  It’s Jesus.  Our holiness isn’t ours, it doesn’t come from the Bible, and it doesn’t come by our own works or merit.  We are holy simply because Jesus is holy, and if you are in Christ then you are holy…and since Christ’s holiness is perfect…you can rest assured that no matter what you do or how hard you try…you’ll never be more holy…because your holiness has nothing to do with you…and everything to do with Jesus.

Well, tomorrow is the tenth day of this series.  It seems to be going pretty fast.  I’m enjoying it.  Maybe I’m writing to myself…but I am enjoying this series.  I am blessed to be able to do this for the Lord, and I know that He is getting the glory for each message I write.

Lord, thank You that Your Word is dependable.  It always accomplishes that which it is sent out to do.  You Word is never false.  You Word is never wrong.  It’s never blemished.  It’s never off or in error.  Your Word is perfect, Your Word is perfect, and I thank You that Your Word is something that we all can trust beyond a shadow of doubt.  I love You and I love Your Word.  All praise and glory and honor to YOU.  In Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 8 of 32 – Nourishment

Today’s Scripture:  “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”  1 Peter 2:2

Introduction:

We are coming back in this study to personal application of what the Word of God is.  Yesterday the Lord gave me this awesome little illustration:  “Our Bibles are like refrigerator lights. The light doesn’t come on until you open the door. The Bible is the same way. It cannot light our path until we open it up and start reading.”

So, the Word of God is a light unto our path…it helps to illuminate our walk with the Lord because some times our walk with Him isn’t well lit, and the only way that we can see where we are going is by allowing the Light of the Word to be a lamp to our feet, and a light unto our path.

Today…we’re about to find out that it’s nourishment.

Today’s Message:

At the end of Jesus’ 40 day and 40 night fast…the first thing the devil does is tempt Jesus with food because I sure He was hungry and His flesh needed nourishment.  Then Jesus said:  “Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”  As part of what we know as the “Lord’s prayer” we ask God to “give us this day our daily bread”.  Signifying that we understand that His Word is nourishment for our souls while food is nourishment for our bodies.

Peter writes that as newborn believers that we ought to desire the sincere milk of the Word that we would grow.  Thus, another illustration is about to come forth, and this one may not be as good as the one I got yesterday, but who knows…maybe it will be.

Today, we find the nourishment of a baby comes in stages.  First we have the mother’s breast milk…and here is how we ought to be as new-born believers.  That’s what Peter is talking about.  So, what is the milk of the Word?  Things like Justification by Faith, the Gospels, and Salvation by Grace through Faith.  Those are the basics…just as the mother’s breast milk provides the basics of nourishment and nutrition for new-born babies until they are able to handle more solid food…so to does the foundational basics of the Christian life that are found in the Word of God.

Then, if you know Gerber baby food you now know that they begin what they now call “stages”.  The stage of food gets more and more solid the older the baby becomes.  I don’t know much about the stages, but I would guess that they probably give some kind of guidelines as to the age of the baby in relation to the stage of food they should eat.  Each stage the food becomes more solid.

The Word of God should be fed to believers the same way…as they grow and are able to digest and keep down the Word of God in stages.  Each one becoming of more substance, and more that you have to chew…and the less likely they are to choke.  Listen, you don’t start out feeding a brand new baby steak because of a few things.  One…they have no teeth.  Two…they have no idea how to chew.  Third…they will choke on it.

So…you can’t teach a brand new baby Christian things like end times prophecy because they don’t have the ability to digest that yet.  I can remember a time when I was first attending a church down here, and in this church there was a lot of baby Christians.  The pastor was teaching things that I as a mature believe could handle, comprehend, and digest.  However,  I began to notice that in my spirit I was hearing the sound of people choking…and I remember asking the Lord what that was about.  He told me that what was being taught was way too meaty for them, and the sound I was hearing was all the baby Christians choking on what that pastor was teaching.

When teaching new believers you have to start out with the sincere milk of the Word because that’s all that they can handle.  If you start talking to babies in the faith about tithing, sin, end times prophecy, and all that…then they aren’t even going to be able to comprehend anything you’re saying to them.  You have to start out with the God side of things before you can ever begin to teach them about their side, how they’re supposed to live, and even things like the Lord’s return, the rapture, or anything else like that.

Then, as they grow you can start to feed them more meaty messages, but you have to be able to discern where your congregation is at.  If they are asking you about where to start reading in their Bibles don’t tell them to start reading the Old Testament or the book of Revelation.  You start them in Paul’s writings because that’s where the milk of the Word is found.  Even the gospels can be a bit too meaty in places for baby Christians to digest.

The Word of God is nourishment to our souls.  It’s how we grow.  As we read it, and are able to comprehend with the saints, understand it, and begin to apply it to our lives…that’s when you can move on to more meaty topics.  However, that requires us as ministers to be mature, and able to discern where the Holy Spirit wants us to go.

Interactive Study Questions:

Today’s questions come as they relate to 1 Peter 2:2.  So, without further delay…here they are:

  1. What is the importance of pure spiritual milk?
  2. Why should we crave the Word of God?

Conclusion & Prayer:

So, yesterday we learned the Word of God is a light.  Today we learn that it’s spiritual food.  We’ve had two pretty good illustrations over the last couple of days.  Illustrations that I know I couldn’t come up with on my own.  Thanks to the Holy Spirit.  God surely is amazing…isn’t He?  Well, I hope you’re enjoying this series…and I hope you’ll come back tomorrow for Day 9.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the nourishment that Your Word provides to our souls.  Help us to have a holy hunger and thirst for Your Word, and give us an appetite that is unsatisfiable.  Fill us up with the nourishing power of Your Word, Lord God.  We love You, praise You and thank You for Your Word.  We ask that You continue to give us this day…and every day…our Daily Bread.  In Jesus name we pray….Amen & Amen

Why Read the Bible? – Day 7 of 32 – Guide to our Path

Today’s Scripture:  “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  – Psalm 119:105

Introduction:

The last few days, I have barely been able to get through the introduction, and I had the Holy Spirit let me know that we were going to go the way He wanted us to go…and for good reason.  The last few days, I’ve written about how the Bible has lost it’s place in the church as the cornerstone of every pulpit in America.  I wrote about how it used to be the cornerstone of American families, and that if we wanted to stop the moral decay of our nation’s families that we needed to start by bringing the Word of God back into the homes and not as home décor for our cocktail tables, but actually implementing a family devotional time complete with prayer, worship, and Bible study…together.  Let me add that this family devotional time ought to be separate from our own personal devotional time.  Don’t cheat God, and don’t cheat yourselves by thinking that the only time you need to spend in the Word of God apart from church is that half-hour a day devotional time with your family.

No, friends, we need a Word of God revival in our homes and in our churches.  That’s the ONLY way this nation is going to turn around.  It’s not going to be done from the top down.  Almost all the politicians at the state and local level are fools because they have said in their hearts that there is no God, and if they haven’t said that then they are ashamed to proclaim Jesus before men…and you all know what Jesus says about that.  If we are ashamed of Him before the world…He will be ashamed of us before His Father.  If we deny Him before the world…He will deny us before God.  I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Jesus denying me…so I’m going to be one of those who is unashamed of my relationship with Jesus.

Yesterday, I wrote about how the church has lost it’s passion for the Word of God, and I’ll be darned if Evangelist Josh Radford didn’t preach on that same thing…only he said that the church has turned it’s back upon the Holy Ghost…and the only difference is…none.  The Holy Ghost’s ministry is to confirm the Word of God.  His whole purpose is to lead and guide us into all truth.  Well…what can be more all truth than the Word of the Lord?

So…I am encouraged by that because what that let’s me know is that I was indeed hearing from the Holy Spirit…and I hope that you’ve enjoyed the last couple messages.  Today, however, we bring it back home to front street…and we’re going to talk about the Word of God in how it relates to us.

Today’s Message:

“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Y’all ever tried to find your way around in a dark room?  It can be quite fearful, and maybe a bit comical can’t it?  You feel your way around for stuff…”is that the coffee table”.  Has anyone ever lived in a really dark house like me and counted the steps?  However, have you ever noticed also that the slightest bit of light will guide you?  You may not be able to see everything, but you can see just enough to navigate your way to where your going.

The Word of God is just like that night-light.  You know, as I continue to grow in my relationship with God, and walk with the Lord the one thing I have learned is that it’s not an easily navigated path to walk down.  That’s why we need the light of the Word of God to direct our paths.  How many times do we read that we are to trust the Lord and He will direct our paths, our steps, and our journey?  You see, the Bible, friends is our night-light.

Let’s face it.  I’m sure you’ve found out like I have that just because you’re a Christian it doesn’t mean everything is rosy, and that there’s nothing impeding your pathway to your destiny.  In fact, I’m sure you’ve found just like I have that it’s the exact opposite.  There’s always going to be opposition.   There’s always going to be times where the Lord is going to lead you down a path that’s not very well lit…and the only way that those path’s can be safely navigated is by sticking with the Word of God.

When I started writing these messages they weren’t very good.  There were a lot of spelling errors, grammatical errors, and I can be honest…some of those messages were hard reads.  However, the more I’ve been doing this the better my messages are becoming, and the reason for that is because the Word of God is illuminating the path.  Instead of relying upon my own abilities or anything like that I am relying solely upon the Lord and the Holy Spirit for direction.

When this series is nearing the end I’ll begin to seek the Lord for direction for the next series.  Why?  I don’t want to do anything with this ministry that isn’t ordered by the Lord.  The Bible says the steps of the righteous are ordered of the Lord.  I want every message, every series, and everything I write to be ordered by the Lord.  After all, this ministry is about HIM.

I couldn’t have a ministry with the name “Christlike” Ministries…and not have it be about the Word of God…because Jesus is the Word.  I wouldn’t have anything to write about if it wasn’t for the Word of God.  Sure I could make up a commentary, but I don’t want to do that.  I want to be authentic.  I want God’s Word spoken, I want the name of Jesus to be glorified, and I want God to get the praise for this ministry.

You know, I had a long one-sided discussion with the Lord yesterday morning while I was running my route for Krispy Kreme.  I was talking to Him about how I think sometimes people make ministry too complicated.  There are people who are called to be out on the front-lines God bless them.  There are people who are called to stand up and preach to congregations, auditoriums, and huge crowds.  There are people who are called to have their name on the church signs, and be known.  However, there are people like me who realize that we do our best work behind the scenes…and that’s what this ministry is…this is what we do.

We’re about helping people to develop their own personal relationship and walk with God.  We’re an Ephesians 4 kind of ministry…equipping the saints.  That’s what we’re about.  However, it’s good sometimes to have the path of your life illuminated by the Word of the Lord.  Josh Radford came, and we had a week of Evangelism training…and I was reminded of how important the Great Commission is…and that one of the things Paul taught was that all can evangelize…but not all are evangelists.  All of us can do the work of an evangelist without having the title of an evangelist.

I know I am called to be a pastor, but I’m the pastor of Christlike Ministries NWA.  I still have a role to play in the great commission.  I am still called to share the gospel, and be a soul-winner for Jesus.  Those are just some of the things that the Word of God has been a light to my path about.

What kinds of things do you need the light of God’s Word for in your life?  My friend, you’re not going to turn the light on until you open your Bibles.  Our Bibles are like refrigerator lights.  The light doesn’t come on until you open the door.  The Bible is the same way.  It cannot light our path until we open it up and start reading.  If you need some direction…get out your Bible…and ask the Lord to show you…He will…I promise He will.  I know that because that happened in my life.

Interactive Study Questions:

I don’t have much of an introduction for today’s questions, but here they are.

  1. Why does God want to guide us?
  2. Does a lamp cast light miles ahead?
  3. What does this say about God’s guidance in our lives?

Conclusion & Prayer:

I kind of liked the little illustration that the Lord just dropped in my spirit about the Bible being like a refrigerator light.  I remember as a child I was curious one time.  I remember how I’d open it a little, and close it little by little…but could never figure out why the light would go out or what happened once the door was closed.  Now I know there is a button that causes the light to go out.  Isn’t God awesome…I got more to this illustration.

That’s kind of what we do with the Bible.  As baby and immature believers we are kind of like that curious kid that wants to know what happens to the light in the refrigerator.  Only, with the Bible we sample a little of the light of the Word of God in our lives, and when it goes out we search all around everything else…except in the Bible for the reason the light went out.  Mature believers know that to have the light of God’s Word on their lives all the time…they have to spend time reading the Word all the time.  The Bible has to be an open source for their lives…but so many of us open it and close it…and we never really understand why God’s Word isn’t making our paths more visible.  It’s because we’re walking around in the dark trying to feel our way…instead of letting the light of God’s Word show us the way.

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet…and a light unto my path.

Lord, we thank You for the illuminating power of Your Word.  It has the power to lead and guide us in all areas of life.  Help us, Lord God, to not allow the light of Your Word to be shut off, but turn on…and turned on brighter and brighter.  Give us, Lord, the wisdom You offer without limit.  Give us the understanding and knowledge in the revelation of You…most of all Lord…give us a hunger, passion, and fire for Your Word in our lives.  Help us, Father God, to restore the Word of God to it’s rightful place in our personal lives, our families, our churches, and one day…hopefully again this great nation.  Raise up men & women of God who aren’t ashamed of Your Word, who still believe in the Old Paths, and preach with fire like Josh did this morning.

Lord, bless Josh Radford’s ministry.  Continue to give him passion, fire, and an overflowing indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  Protect him, Lord God, from those that would seek to bring scandal into his ministry.  Protect him, Jesus, from those who would wrongfully use him, and slander him.  I ask, Father, that You’d raise up more Josh Radford’s and Cass Hill’s and Joel Stockstill’s.

I ask Lord, that You’d help me to be more committed, more separated, more of a servant, more yielded to Your Spirit, and much, much more saturated in Your Spirit, Your Word, and Your presence.  I love You, Jesus…I praise and worship You…Lord God.  I declare that You are my God…and Your Word will be a cornerstone of this ministry…and I ask that should we ever stray away from it…that You’d remove this ministry’s lamp-stand.

I give You all the glory, honor, and praise.  I ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 6 of 32 – Preach the word

Today’s Scripture:  “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” – 2 Timothy 4:2

Introduction:

Is anyone other than me tired of the Prosperity Pimps?  How about the Positive Thinking Doctrine that’s invaded the body of Christ because of ministries like Joel Osteen’s?  I know that the Bible talks about a time where people will have itching ears, and be turned away to fables…but I think the fables have become more like fairy tales.

Have you noticed that the only ones making any money off of the Prosperity Doctrine that is being preached on TBN are the preachers?  Has anyone other than me noticed that it’s getting harder to find good, solid Biblical teaching on television?

Yesterday’s message was about the moral decline of the family…but today’s message is going to be even better.  I believe it’s going to be another one of those that goes away from the message that  the writers of this devotional had intended, but we here at Christlike Ministries NWA believe that if the Holy Ghost wants to go a different direction…we’ll do what He wants…because how many of you know that when the Holy Ghost talks…the messages are better anyways.

Today’s Message:

Once again, I could barely get through the introduction before I realized this is another message that’s about to take a Holy Ghost detour.  So, let’s take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to speak, and see where we go with this message today.

Holy Spirit, we love it when You speak.  Once again, I yield my fingers to You, and ask that You would lead and guide me into all Truth.  I ask, Holy Spirit, that You once again would give me utterance and unction that only comes from the supernatural ability in which You supply.  I thank You that my fingers type only that which You have to say, and I thank You that the Word of God never returns void, and always does that which it is sent out to do.  We ask for ears to hear, hearts to receive, and the courage to respond as You desire us to.  We ask this in Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen

Well, now we’re going to get to the root of what’s behind the moral decline in the Church.  I just recently watched a two-part message by Donnie Swaggart simply titled “Old Paths”.  Yes, I realize that everyone thinks that the Swaggart’s are full of scandal…but as I listened to these messages I was reminded of my lack of fire for the Word of God…and I found myself agreeing with much of what was said.

You see, friends, there was a time when just as I stated that the Bible was the cornerstone of the family it was the authority within the church.  There’s always been winds of false doctrine that has invaded the body of Christ.  Remember Paul basically Galatians to scold believers during Paul’s day that began to accept and try to live out the Judaizers doctrine of salvation by works and faith?  I wish that was the worst kinds of doctrine that are invading the body of Christ today.

However, if you turn on TBN most of the time your going to hear a message from someone preaching about prosperity.  I love that Donnie Swaggart calls these people “Prosperity Pimps” because that’s exactly what they are.  They are trying to sell you everything from oil anointed prayer cloths to a portion of their anointing.  They give out bogus promises that if you sow a seed of this amount your mortgage will be paid or you’ll receive double the seed you sow.  As I mentioned in the introduction…isn’t it funny (not really) that the only ones who seem to be wearing the Armani suits, driving the Mercedes Benz’s, flying in private jets, and are multi-millionaires are the preachers…excuse me…Prosperity Pimps?

Then you turn on a program like Joel Osteen’s.  You here this positive thinking, and living a better life now stuff…and it makes you feel so good.  However, have you ever noticed he’s the only one who has this “better life now”?  I wonder what his father would think if he heard on of Joel’s messages?  I’m betting that John Osteen wouldn’t be happy to hear the garbage that he’s preaching…you know who else isn’t a fan of what Joel’s teaching?  The Holy Spirit.

I could run down the list of doctrine’s that are invading the church, but then I’d get away from the point of this message, and from where the Holy Spirit is going.  So, let’s reign it back in.

The problem in the church is that they have forsaken the Word of God for the sake of church attendance, and making sure they don’t offend people.  Today preachers are more concerned with offending the people in their congregations than offending God, and blaspheming the Holy Spirit…yes…I said misrepresenting the Holy Spirit.

I’ve written several messages on this subject, and the thing that I always come back to is how in the world can you have anything to say if you don’t say it from the Word of God?  Rick Warren’s book is not a topic for Sunday morning service.  It may be a wonderful thing to do in a small group or Bible study, but standing in front of a congregation preaching about the Purpose For Life isn’t going to help them to realize they need Jesus.  It’s not going to confront them about sin in their lives, and it’s not going to get anyone saved, set free, healed or delivered.  It’s just going to be a long drawn out series of messages from a Pastor who wrote a book.

Listen, I’m not saying it’s wrong or a bad idea to read good Christian books.  What I am saying is they have no place being taught as the main subjects in the pulpit of churches unless you have the Word of God to support, illustrate, and back up what it is your teaching.

What ever happened to the Old Paths anyways?  What ever happened to allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide the direction of the services?  What ever happened to preachers who study the Word of God instead of going online for ready-made sermons?  What ever happened to “Preach the Word”?  I’ll tell you what happened.  Preachers have forsaken the Word of God for the sake of church attendance.  How many of you know that the more people who come to your church…the more money you make from tithes and offerings?  Yes…I went there.

I have seen the websites devoted to helping pastors…complete with sermons.  Outlines, notes, illustrations, and yeah…they include scripture…but you read the body of their message…and it’s garbage.  No Holy Spirit.  No passion.  No anything.  Just a published message that you sometimes have to buy from the website.

Oh, Lord, that You would raise up an army of preachers who still believe that the Word of God is just as valid as it was when it was written.  Preachers who don’t think the Word of God is outdated or out of touch with today’s society.  Please, Lord God, raise up preachers, pastors, evangelists and teachers who will get the Word of God back into the pulpits.  Those who still believe it’s okay to do what Paul exhorted Timothy to do…and raise up those who are unashamed to “Preach the Word”.  In Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen

Remember what I told you about going into a house that has a dust ring on the coffee table where their Bible is?  Well, if you should find yourself in a church that’s not preaching the Word of God there’s only one piece of advice that I’m here to give you.

RUN!!! Get out of that church as fast as you can.  I promise that you won’t have to worry about that with Christlike Ministries NWA.

Interactive Study Questions:

I sure hope that you guys are taking the time to at least think about these questions.  I really don’t want this to be just me writing, and you reading.  Anyways, here’s today’s study questions.

  1. What would make the time not favorable?
  2. When it says preach the word, do you think this verse is referring just to pastors?
  3. How are we to preach the word in our lives?

Conclusion & Prayer:

I want you to know that this ministry believes in the Old Paths. This ministry believes the Word of God is just as valid today as it was when it was written. This ministry will continue to preach the Word, and will not be afraid or ashamed to take a stand against the wiles of the devil. We will not be seeker friendly, but Jesus friendly. We will be God’s Word friendly, and it is the Word of God that will continue to direct, govern, and be preached by this ministry.

We are committed to the Word of God.  We are committed to Preach the Word.  We believe the Bible is the absolute authority for our lives, our ministry, and we endeavor to do the best we can to live by it.  It is the cornerstone of Christlike Ministries NWA.

Lord God, we cry out to You today asking You to raise up men and women of God who still believe in the Old Paths.  Raise up preachers, pastors, teachers, and evangelists who still believe it’s hip to Preach Your Word.  Convict those, Holy Spirit that do not, and draw them back…to their first love…to the Word of God, and I would ask Lord that You would remove the lampstands of the churches and ministries who refuse to return to preaching Your Word.  Help us, Lord God, to be able to quickly discern whether a church preaches Your Word or not.  Lord, we love You.  We give You glory, and we thank You for speaking to us this day…in Jesus’ name we pray…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 5 of 32 – Cleansing of God’s Word

Today’s Scripture:  “25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” Ephesians 5:25-27

Introduction:

Five days into this study, and we’ve discovered a few things about the book called the Holy Bible.  On day one, we discovered that the Word of God is profitable, and $11 billion dollars cheaper than all those self-help books.  On day two, we learned that one of the biggest reasons we need to read the Bible is because that’s how we find out about Jesus.  Who He is.  What He did.  Why He came.  The Holy Bible is really a book that’s all about Jesus.  On the third day, we were reminded that the Word of God is alive and powerful, and that it is the only offensive weapon when we are wearing the full Armor of God.  Yesterday, we read that the Bible really is a manual for how to live life.  We can look in the Bible, and find answers for any and every area of our lives.

Today, we get to something that’s closely related to what we’re talking about at New Life Christian Center with Pastor Cass Hill is a series of messages on Family Ties.  I believe one of the greatest things that threatens the fabric of homes in the United States of America is the lack of Bible reading within the homes.   We’d rather watch television, play video games, and do whatever else than sit and have a time of family Bible Devotional time…and I am freely admitting that I am just as guilty.  So, I am preaching this message to myself as we look at day 5 of “Why Read The Bible?”…let’s see about the “Cleansing of God’s Word”.

Today’s Message:

As I was writing the introduction, I had the Holy Spirit drop in my heart the direction this message needs to go.  Who knows sometimes it’s okay to let the Holy Spirit speak and have His way?  So, I want to take a moment to pray and invite the Holy Spirit to speak what He wants and do what He wants in this message.

Holy Spirit, I thank You for the prompting You have given me about what direction this message needs to go.  I yield myself to You, and ask You Holy Spirit to give us all ears to hear what it is that You would have to say to us through this message.  I pray that it would be clear, concise, and direct.  I pray for the utterance and unction that You, Holy Spirit, supply me with now supernaturally, and that I would speak only of the oracles of You.  Sink this message deep within my heart, and the hearts of those who will read this message.  I ask Holy Spirit that You would take over now, and speak…in Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen.

So, as I was writing the introduction I barely got through the last paragraph when I described what’s at the root of the moral decline within the family today, and I readily admitted that I am just as much at fault as anyone else.  Has anyone ever heard the phrase:  “The family that prays together…stays together?”.  Well, in addition to praying together as a family, and I mean for more than just saying grace at meals…and yes…I am speaking this to myself as well…we also need to study the Bible together as a family.  I don’t care if we take 15 minutes to do a devotional and 5 minutes to pray…it needs to be done…and when those two things are done…we will see a revival of reconciling families all over the nation.

The Bible used to be the cornerstone of every ministry, every church, every family, every classroom, and even the government.  However, since the government has worked to remove the Word of God from every last institution they possibly can…we as the body of Christ have gotten the idea that it’s okay to remove it from the most important institution altogether…the family.

23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. Mark 3:23 – 27

Listen, if you want to know where the nations moral decay is coming from you don’t start at the top, and work your way down.  You start with the smallest part, and work your way up.  We have no right to blame the government for something that we could have prevented ourselves by remaining steadfast in the apostle’s doctrine.  If we’d have continued to study to show ourselves approved, and searched the scriptures daily there wouldn’t be all this garbage going on in this nation today.

Do you think we’d see the filth we see on television if every America family that was Bible believing would have continued to make the Word of God the cornerstone of our families?  It used to be that you couldn’t even hear a cuss word on television, and now you have prime time television shows with “R” ratings because of language, sexual content, and violence.  Do you think that we would see the kind of video games we see today?  How about pornographic websites?  Can you see where I am going?  Had the Bible continued to be the main cornerstone of Christian families then perhaps they wouldn’t be so weak and willing to turn the other cheek.

Yes, we do have to be peacemakers, but Paul also teaches us to earnestly contend for the faith.  Have we done that as the body of Christ?  NO.  Why?  Because we don’t value the Word of God anymore.  We have made the Word of God a decorative piece on our coffee tables.  Some of us even have that great big family Bible that sits on the coffee table out there to pretend and portray that this house is the Lord’s house…but is it really?

I can guarantee you that unless they are really good housekeepers (like my wife is) then you’ll see at least an inch of dust, and a nice little ring of dust if you were to pick that sucker up.  Do you know what you do when you’re in a house like that?  Find an excuse to leave!  Well, I take it back.  Share with them The Gospel Soul-Winning Script, and if they reject you…RUN!  If it looks like they haven’t picked up that Bible even to dust…the get out of there because I can guarantee you that God is not the head of that home.

I am convicted myself.  I am supposed to be the spiritual leader of my home, and I’ve spent all this time writing messages about the importance of the Word of God…and I don’t even have a mandatory family Bible devotional time in my house.  My wife even got us a devotional book, and we’ve put it away.  For what?  For the sake of television or whatever?  Shame on me.  I admit that I need to change that immediately in my home.  I can’t proclaim to the world; “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Like Joshua did (Joshua 24:15).

So, this message is probably far, far away from where the YouVersion writers of this devotional series intended it to go, but that’s why we have the Holy Ghost.  Some times He has something to say that supersedes anything we might have ready or thought we would say.

The bottom line of today’s message is simple, friends.  We need to restore the Word of God to it’s rightful place in our homes.  If the  Family Ties of our homes is to be strengthened to a point of being unbreakable then we must return to the Word of God.  It must be a priority both in our personal lives, and in our family.  Turn off the television, cell phones, and everything else for a half an hour.  Turn on some worship music, take a moment to open up in prayer, find a devotional to read, and then close in another prayer…and then go on about your evening.  I’m pretty sure that for the most part that can be done in a half hour or so.

I know that I am convicted that I need to start that in my home…and I hope that this will encourage you to start doing it in yours as well.

Interactive Study Questions:

Now, I realize that we didn’t come anywhere close to writing about what I’m sure was intended to be written about Ephesians 5:25-27.  But, we can say something about it here before we get into the questions.  I guess we can tie in the title of this message to the way the message came out.  The tie in is this.  If we want to cleanse the moral fabric of this great nation of ours then we need to start at the family level, and the best way to cleanse the home is by making sure that our homes are a house that serves the Lord.  That our homes don’t have Bibles as decorative pieces, but that they’re being read and studied from in our homes.  That includes making sure our homes have worship music playing, and that they are also homes of prayer.

Here’s today’s Interactive Study Questions:

  1. What is the role of the Bible in this passage?
  2. How do you think the Bible could be used to present you without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish?

Conclusion & Prayer:

My friends, I’m challenging you and myself…starting in June to make sure that we are having some sort of family devotional time with worship, prayer, and a Bible Devotional reading. If you need help, I have a simple study guide that I can mail you, or you can go to RBC Ministries and sign up to have the Our Daily Bread Bible Devotional mailed to your home. They’re even online now so you don’t even need to have a paper copy mailed to you.

I know that I’m accepting the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and am going to start doing the very same thing beginning on June 1.

Lord, forgive us…forgive me.  We have made Your Word into a conversation piece of decoration instead of edification, education, and enrichment.  We have made Your Word a dust collector, and have allowed it to become of none effect…and we ask You…Lord…to forgive us.  Give us a hunger, passion, and desire for Your Holy Word that we have never had before…help us to be bold where there is fear, and get an established routine of Bible Study, Worship, and Prayer into our home lives.  Help us, Lord God, to overcome the temptations to put it off.  Oh Lord, we love You.  We give You glory, and we thank You for speaking to us this day.  Give us receptive hearts, ears to hear, and minds that comprehend all that was said…and help us to have the commitment to put it into practice.  In Jesus’ name…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 4 of 32 – Direction

Today’s Scripture:  “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39

Introduction:

Another ministry page on Facebook asked how often people read their Bibles.  Out of the 80 comments half of them (which is better than what I was expecting) read their Bibles daily.  The other half said the either barely read it at all or they don’t read it as often as they should.  See, that tells me that there’s a knowledge in the body of Christ that they need to be reading the Bible daily.  One person said that time just seems to get away from me.

I used to feel like that too until I did this fast from the worldly entertainment venues, and found that I had given more of my time to being entertained than I did enriched.  I spent more time watching television than I did anything else, and now that I’m not watching television at all I realize that I have tons of time that I didn’t know I had.

See, some of us need to do like I did and re-adjust your priorities.  We need to stop playing games with God because play time is literally over.  If you cannot look around at the state of the world we’re in, and not be listening for that trumpet to sound…then my friend it’s a pretty good sign that when that trumpet does sound you won’t hear it.

See, I believe the trumpet is going to be like the sound of rain that Elijah heard.  Everyone thought he was nuts, but he kept saying that he heard the sound of rain.  Then one day it rained, and all those who thought he was nuts realized he wasn’t so crazy after all.  I believe that the trumpet is going to be just like the sound of rain…only true believers will hear that trumpet sound, and the rest of the world who thought us Jesus Freaks were weirdo’s are going to realize that we were right.  But, by then it’s going to be too late.

I wasn’t going to go there, but apparently the Holy Spirit needed to give some of you a prophetic kick in the butt, and so there it is.  When nearly half of those who responded said that they barely read the Bible…that again is what I believe is the greatest issue facing the church.  Which is why this topic is so burned on me, and why I know this is a timely series to get into.

Today’s Message:

So, how often should we read our Bibles anyways?  Well, the correct answer really is daily.  The Amplified Version of the Bible of  John 5:39 reads this way:   “You search and investigate and pore over the Scriptures diligently, because you suppose and trust that you have eternal life through them. And these [very Scriptures] testify about Me!”.  Acts 17:11 (KJV) says:  “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

I want us to take a look at Acts 17:11 for a moment. There are two points that I’d like to dig into a bit here.

First, they received the word with all readiness of mind.  Brings to mind something that Jesus spoke to us in the Be-Attitudes.  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.  See, it takes a hunger and thirst for knowledge, righteousness, and the things of God to want to hear the voice of God.  Everyone always talks about how they want God to speak to them.  I hate to break the news to you, friend, but God has spoken to you.  He spoke 66 books into existence, and the Word of God as Peter says is a more sure word of prophesy than the day they witnessed God speaking to Jesus from heaven saying:  “This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased.”.  What Peter is saying is that they were witnesses to the audible voice of God, but he still points back to the written Word of God as a more sure Word than what actually heard God speak…audibly.

When you go to church do you go to hang out, socialize, see people you haven’t seen since last Sunday, or do you go with purpose?  Do you go to really worship God?  Do you go to hear and receive with a readiness of mind the Word of God?  Do you go to have an encounter with God, or do you just go for the great music?

Secondly, here is the point…they searched the scriptures daily.  Add to this point the Amplified Bible’s translation of John 5:39, and we really have a mouthful of things to talk about before we end this message.

“Search and investigate and pour over the scriptures diligently”.  How is it that you study your Bibles?  Do you just read it…just to read it…or do you search it, investigate it, and pour over it?  I am ashamed to admit that sometimes I do get caught up in just reading it to read it, but I do also know what it is to investigate scripture.  Some times when I’m writing messages like this I’ll get to going on little side journey’s because something else catches my heart, and the Holy Spirit leads me in another direction…but that cannot happen when I just read the Bible just to do it out of habit or routine.  No, it’s good to make reading the Bible a habit, and it’s important to make sure reading it is part of your daily routine.  However, there is a difference in just reading the Bible, and really studying it isn’t there?  Let me ask the question of you this way…how long has it been since you sat down, had a topic in mind, grabbed a concordance, your Bible, a pen and paper, and maybe another translation or two of the Bible…and studied a topic?  Here…I’ll ask it of you an even easier way.  Do you study the Bible like you studied your school books?

I have to admit that I haven’t really sat down and done a topical study in a while.  When I do I have my normal Bible, a parallel Bible with 4 different translations, a commentary Bible, a notebook, highlighters, different colored pens, and I have my computer open to YouVersion.  But, that’s what is meant by really pouring over the scriptures.  I’ve had some really awesome times studying the Bible like that, and even I am challenged to know that I need to be doing that more often.

Here again, we read one of the most important reasons to read the Bible.  Because it’s about Jesus, and the only way we can know Jesus is to search the scriptures.  By the way, I still haven’t seen any responses or comments about where the three times it is written…”In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  I haven’t forgotten about it, but I am just curious to know if anyone has found all three places yet…and would like to share where they found them?

That’s what I mean by “investigate” the scriptures.  There’s an open question on the table about where that particular verse is written three times.  I’ve even given you a couple of really good hints.  The first hint is that the first time we read it is in the very first book of the Bible.  The other two times it’s written the same person wrote it.  Once in his gospel, once in his own books later in the Bible, and here’s a third clue.  The person that wrote it twice has a gospel, and wrote three epistles…and the book of Revelation.

So…anyone know where those three verses are found yet?  Actually, I do have a prize for someone who gets this question correct.  So…any takers?  Anyone want a free item?  If you can tell me where:  “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  I’ll mail you a random prize…ready…set…search the scriptures…and tell me where they are.

Interactive Study Questions:

Remember I did say this was an audience participation series?  I’d like to see some comments, responses, and answers to the study questions.  I’d like to see an answer to my bonus challenge question, but if you don’t want the prize I have to send you…then it’s your loss.   Anyways, here are today’s questions:

  1. What does this verse tell you about God’s relationship with His Son?
  2. What do you think the purpose of the Old Testament is?

Conclusion and Prayer:

Believe it or not, I am being challenged as I write these messages too.  I am being challenged to spend even more of my time reading the Bible, searching the scriptures, and really saturating myself in the Word of the Lord.  It’s important to know it, read it, study it, and speak it.  It’s also good to know it because when you pray the Word of God you are praying the very Will of God.  God cannot deny His Word…if He said it…and you pray it…then He has to respond to it.

Lord God, we come to you today acknowledging that we haven’t been as diligent in searching the scriptures as we ought.  We admit there are days that go by that we don’t even look at the Bible let-a-lone pick it up.  Lord, give us this readiness of mind to study and search Your Word.  Give us a hunger and a thirst for Your Word that will only be satisfied by being saturated in the studying and reading and hearing of Your Word.  Teach us, Lord God, how to pray the scriptures, and Lord…we ask this of You in Jesus’ mighty name…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 3 of 32 – Alive and Powerful

Today’s Scripture:  “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12

Introduction:

So…has anyone found where “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.”  are all written?  I’ll give you a hint.  The same person wrote it twice, and if you don’t know who the “Beloved Disciple” was then you really need to spend more time reading the Bible, and less time doing other things.  The other one is the very first verse of the Bible, and if you don’t know where that is…then you really have to turn off the television, and get out your Bible and start reading.

So, today’s message is titles alive and powerful, and has one of my favorite verses in the Bible.  Without any further delay…let’s get right into “Alive and Powerful”.

Today’s Message:

Hebrews 4:12 gets right to the point, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite verses in the Bible when it comes to the Word of God.  It’s here in this verse that we find out that the Bible isn’t just another story book or collection of writings or that it’s not relevant to every generation since it was first penned.  This is where we find out that this book…the Bible…is the most powerful book ever written.

It’s more entertaining than the latest romance novel…in fact…if you like romance novels the Bible is full of love stories.  Read the book of Ester.  Not only is it about a powerful woman who would one day save the entire nation of Israel, but it’s a love story between a queen and her king.  It’s more compelling than Steven Kings new book.  It’s got poetry, it’s got wise sayings, and it’s full of personal stories and biographies.  It’s certainly a collection of writings, but these aren’t just any writings…this is the alive and powerful Word of the only God that is still also alive and powerful.

Exactly how powerful is this book?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  Why don’t we let this Book tell you what makes it so powerful.

  1. Romans 1:16:  “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation”.  The first thing this book can do that no other book can do is lead you into right standing with it’s Author.  No other author in the world allows you to have as personal a relationship as the One who inspired the writings of this one.  It’s the only book of it’s kind.  There is no self-help book, no novel, no non-fiction or fiction book that can do what this book can.
  2. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5:  “4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”.  Now I know the question already forming in your mind.  What does the Word of God have to do with this verse.  Well…when you add to it the next one you’ll understand.
  3. Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV):  “and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.  Out of all the parts of the Armor of God the Word of God is our main offensive weapon.  I know you’re what you’re going to say.  “What about prayer?”.  To which I’m simply going to answer that question this way.  The next time you’re in a spiritual battle…try praying your own words first, and then try praying the Word of God…and see which one yields the more powerful results.
  4. Hebrews 4:12 :  ““For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

This brings us back to our main verse for today.  It’s alive, it’s powerful, it’s sharper than any two-edged sword.  It slices between soul and spirit, it divides between joint and marrow, and it is able to discern the thoughts and intent of the heart.”

There is NO other book in the world that can not only make this claim, but back it up.  There is no other book that can do so much, and be relevant for centuries.  This Bible that so many scoff and ridicule is also the very book that is going to one day judge the world.  This is the very book that God is going to hold every person who came into being and existence accountable too.

This is the only book in the world that has been a top seller since it’s original writings, and has many translations in many languages…but it all tells the same story.  The story of Jesus as we learned yesterday.

This is the best book ever written.  The greatest story ever told.  This is the ONLY book that has a story that is still unfolding today before our eyes.  This is the only book that has been written that is still writing it’s story.

This book…the Bible…is the greatest book ever written.  Why don’t you take some time to acquaint yourself with yours again.  Read the Gospels and receive salvation.  Read the Proverbs and receive wisdom for life.  Read the Psalms to find some of the greatest songs, poems, hymns, and more ever written.  Read the Book of Revelation to find out how the world ends, or Genesis to find out how the world began.  Read the Christmas story so that you understand why it’s not about Christmas trees, Christmas carols, or any thing else the world has made it about today.

Read about a man who was once a murderer of Christians who became the greatest of writers penning two-thirds of the New Testament.  Read about the understanding that was given to Peter, the knowledge that was given to John, and what Jesus’ own brother James learned from after the Savior.  Read about the prophets of old, and how what they wrote yesterday is coming true today.

There is so much that could be listed about how great this book…The Bible…really is, but don’t take my word for it…read it for yourself.  Maybe you’ll discover something that wasn’t written in this message.  Maybe you’ll see something else in it that explains why this book is so powerful.  Maybe it will inspire you to write messages like this, or get behind a pulpit and preach it.

The under riding theme of all these messages is still the same…get out your Bibles, dust them off, and start reading.  If you want more power in your life you won’t find a more powerful book than the Word of God.

Interactive Study Questions:

Well, here we are.  One the third day we get to one of my favorite verses in the Bible because it is about…well…the Bible.  Today…we have two and a quarter questions.  I haven’t seen any answers.  I’d love to see what’s happening with those of you who are reading these messages…if you’re reading them.  I don’t care if I’m writing to myself…this is good stuff.  So, here’s today’s questions or points to ponder or meditations…as it relates to Hebrews 4:12.

  1. What is the purpose for the Bible in this verse?
  2. Have you ever felt that the Bible has done this in your life?
  3. How?

Conclusion & Prayer:

Well, I don’t know about you, but I really liked today’s message.  It’s so good that I may have to read it, and I might even print it out and bring a copy of it to my pastor.  I truly am having a blast writing during this series, and am hopeful that it’s going to make a difference in the lives of those who are following along.  It’s been such a pleasure doing this for the Lord, and I sincerely hope I am having a positive impact upon the lives of those of you who are following along.

Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your Word is alive and powerful.  I thank You that it has the ability to discern between the thoughts and intents of the heart.  I thank You that it has the ability to slice through joint and marrow, and that it has the ability to divide soul from spirit.  I thank You that Your Word always accomplishes that which it is sent out to do, and I thank You that You have entrusted me with to preach Your Word in this way.  I ask that You would continue to speak through these messages, and most of all, Lord God, that You and Your Word would always be magnified above my own desires and reputation.  I pray that You would be glorified through these messages.  I love You Lord, and ask these things in the name of Jesus…Amen & Amen

Why Read the Bible? – Day 2 of 32 – God and Engaging the Bible: Part 2

Study Scripture:  “ But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” – John 20:31

Introduction:

I can tell that this is going to be a “right on time” message because one of the first posts on Facebook I saw this morning was a question about the main issue facing the world-wide church today.  There were some that listed a few sins, some that listed a few other things, but there was only a few of us who really understands the main epidemic that is killing the power in the church.  What is the real issue facing the church today?  How about that statistic I found yesterday from 2009 that said that 12% of the Christians they polled read their Bibles on a daily basis, and that means the other 88% use it as home decor.

That, my friends, is the number one issue facing the church today, and the reason I say that is because all the other issues that people were making comments about would be solved by simply returning to the Word of God.  There isn’t a problem in the church today that cannot be corrected by a sincere return to having the Bible as the cornerstone…but the words of Paul to 2 Timothy 3:1-7 ring out as a prophetic message that’s being fulfilled right before our faces.

Today’s Message:

In today’s verse we read that one of the reasons we read the Bible is because that’s how we find out who Jesus is.  If it weren’t for the Bible we wouldn’t know about Jesus, and we wouldn’t know that really the Bible is about Him.

We wouldn’t know things like:  “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  We would never have come to understand that every Bible we hold in our hands is Jesus.  How do I know that?  The Bible says that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”.  Now at first that might not resonate with us until we couple that with the first verse.  When you understand that the Word was God, and that the Word became flesh…then the logical conclusion to draw here is that Jesus is the Bible…and the Bible is Jesus.

The Bible is the very foundation of the Christian faith, and it saddens me when I read statistics like I did about how out of the people polled in that survey in 2009 that only 12% of them read their Bibles every day.  That’s why the church today has a form of godliness, but there’s no power in them…because there’s no Word of God being preached or taught in a correctly divided context.  Today’s sermons are about the “feel good” religion, the prosperity message, and lately “positive thinking” messages.

Those doctrines are absolutely killing the power of the body of Christ especially when you think about the fact that 12% of the people in Joel Osteen’s church read their Bibles everyday.  The more startling thing to me is that those 12% who read the Bible daily still attend his church.  I liked his messages at first until I started to realize what he wasn’t teaching, and how everything he taught had such a “positive thinkers” mentality behind it.

Ummm.  I am all for taking every thought into the captivity and obedience of Christ.  That’s Biblical.  What isn’t Biblical is that we can “think ourselves” into a better life.  Jesus didn’t say that if we had faith the size of a mustard seed if we looked at that fig tree and thought about how wonderful it would be if it would just get out of our way it would obey us…did He?  No…He said to do what?  Speak to it.

By the way, I’m not part of the “name it and claim it” crowd neither.  I do believe in positive confession.  I do believe that the power of life and death is in the tongue, and I do believe that we can speak ourselves right out of a blessing if we’re speaking from a place of doubt and unbelief.  However, I don’t believe that if I name that I’m going to be the owner of a $250,000 house that God is suddenly going to bless me with a title-deed to a house.  The practical side to that is that we have to be good stewards of our finances, and eventually one day save the kind of money we need to buy a house.

Now, I do believe in positive confession.  I do believe that you can confess your way to healing and out of healing.  I do believe that you can speak good things, and bad things into your life.  However, I believe that in all reality faith speaks, and while I believe having a positive mindset is a good thing.  I’m fairly certain that when Paul wrote Philippians 4:8 he had some thing much deeper in mind that “positive thinking”.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I believe when it comes to our thought life, what Paul was trying to get at here was that our thinking ought to line up with the Word of God.  Whatsoever things are true.  The Bible says: “Your Word is Truth” John 17:17 (KJV).  Whatsoever things are honest.  The Bible says:  “God is not man that He should lie.” Numbers 23:19 (KJV).  Whatsoever things are just.  The Bible says:  “Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” Romans 7:12 (KJV).  Well, who gave the law?  God did right?  So that means God’s Word is just.  Whatsoever things are pure, lovely, of good report, and praise worthy.

Every single part to Philippians 4:8is an attribute of the Word of God.  God’s Word is spoken in love.  God’s Word is always a good report.  God’s Word is pure.  So, instead of using this as a way to illustrate that we as Christians ought to be “positive thinkers” really isn’t Biblical at all.  We’re to be Word of God thinkers, and that only comes by making sure that we are searching the scriptures daily, studying to show ourselves approved, and making sure that the book of the law is our meditation day and night.

If you want to have a powerful, positive thought life…then feed your mind on the Word of God, and start confessing and speaking it out over your finances, unsaved loved ones, and those who are sick…especially if you’re sick.

No friends, this isn’t some cognitive thinking class…this is about the unadulterated, unblemished, and perfect Word of God that’s profitable for everything…and tells us the most important thing of all…about Jesus.

Interactive Study Questions:

This verse is said to be written only about the Gospel according to John, but I believe the Bible is written to tell the story of Jesus.  Maybe I’m just one of them old-fashioned Jesus Freaks who believes that everything is about Jesus, but then again when I read the Word of God…it’s confirmed to me that I’m right.

  1. Based on today’s scripture…what is the purpose of John?
  2. What does John mean by “the power of his name”?

Conclusion & Prayer:

The Bible is written for Jesus, it’s written about Jesus, and it is Jesus.  After all, if you can come to a different conclusion then I have about what the Bible means when it said three different times:  “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  Here’s a bonus study question for you…who can tell me all three places where that’s written?  If you can’t…then I suggest that’s a good reason to get out your Bible and look it up.  There’s no prize for knowing where they are…other than knowing where the Bible says the same thing three times.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for departing from Your Word, and help us to understand that Your Word is life, it’s truth, and it’s got everything we need to solve the issues and problems not just in our lives, but in the church.  I pray, Lord God, that You would raise up a generation of preachers, teachers, prophets, pastors, and evangelists who still believe, read, teach, and preach the Word as You instructed and commanded us to do through Paul’s letter to Timothy.  I pray all who read these messages would have a burning passion in their hearts that’s only quenched by spending time in Your Word…for thy Word is Truth, and I thank You for it.  I pray these things in Jesus’ might name…Amen & Amen.

Why Read the Bible? – Day 1 of 32 – God and Engaging the Bible: Part 1

Today’s Scripture:  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”  2 Timothy 3:16

Introduction:

Ok, we know how weird it is to try to give you reasons to read the Bible… that are actually in the Bible. That’s why we created this plan; an opportunity to honestly look at what the Bible says and wonder why it says it.

That’s the introduction given on YouVersion by the publishers of this Bible reading plan, and I could kind of sense the question while we were nearing the end of our last series Battlefield of the Mind.  You would think that the answers to the question about why we should read the Bible would be obvious.  However, let me give you some pretty startling statistics from the Christian world today.  I found these statistics on LifeWay’s Website.

  • When asked:  “About how often do you read the Bible either by yourself or together with family members as part of a private activity.?”
    • 37% of Christians say they read their Bibles every day.
    • 22% of Christians say they read their Bibles a couple of times a week.
    • 11 percent read it two or three times a month
    • 8 percent read the Bible about once a month.
  • The Bible Society undertook some research that displayed only 21% of the more than 2,000 church attending participants read their Bible daily.
    • The remaining 57% saying they either read the Bible occasionally or hardly ever.
  • Now similar studies recently conducted in the United States stated that only 12%.

So, when you look at those numbers it’s no surprise that when you have other number like:

  • 52% Of U.S. Christians Believe Jesus Is Not The Only WayTo Heaven.
  • 44 percent of Americans believe homosexuality is a sin.
    • Meanwhile, 43 percent believe it is not,
    • 13 percent are not sure.
  • 34% of born again Christians‘ believe good works will get you into heaven.
  • 52% of born again Christians’ believe in Satan.
  • 74% believe in the resurrection.
    • 14% disagree
    • 11% aren’t sure what they believe about the resurrection.
  • 77% believe in the divine healing power of prayer.

I could get many more statistic by simply writing some of the basic Christian beliefs and Google for percentages of Christians who believe in them.  You may want to do that yourself to find out some more stats, but I think you get the point I’m trying to make…and this is just the introduction to my message today.

So, with numbers like these it is a good idea to actually take the time to do a month-long study on why it is important to read our Bibles, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Today’s Message:

Let’s look at our scripture for today again shall we?  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3:16.

Here’s another good statistic for you.  As recently as 2009, it’s stated that Americans spent $11 billion dollars on self-help books.  I love that the first thing that Paul writes about the Bible here to Timothy is that it is profitable…and then he lists for things the Bible is profitable for.

  1. It’s profitable for doctrine.  That speaks a lot right there.  There are several websites out there to help pastors find ready-made sermons.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read on Facebook or Twitter about some pastor wanting to use so-and-so’s new book for their sermon.  Why?  Since when has it become no longer profitable for doctrine to “preach the Word” 2 Timothy 4:2?  As promised, this ministry will always look to the Bible as it’s sole inspiration and illustration for our messages.  We may borrow the reading plans and use the quotes in the reading plans that we get from YouVerison’s Website, but I promise you the rest is ours.  And we will always seek to use Scripture to back up our points, and we will also always urge you to read the scriptures for yourselves.
  2. It’s profitable for reproof.  What is “reproof”?  It’s actually another word for reprimand, rebuke, or reproach.  When you make a mistake at work sometimes you’re boss will write a letter of reprimand.  It’s simply letting you know that what you did or said wasn’t cool.  So, the Bible is good for reprimanding us when we do things that aren’t cool in the sight of God…like not read the Bible.
  3.  It’s profitable for correction.  The Bible is full of ways and practical teaching that helps us to correct the things in our lives that are contrary to what God wants in them.  It’s also full of warnings about partaking in things that will harm our relationship with God, others, and ourselves.
  4. It’s profitable for instruction to righteousness.  This is the best book in the world to teach us how to live our lives in a way that’s pleasing and acceptable to God.  It’s a text-book for future ministers of the Gospel like me.  It’s an instruction manual for how to live life walking with God.

The Bible is the best self-help book on the market, and it’s definitely profitable because you only need to buy one of them.  Unless you’re like me, and you like to have several different translations so that you can better understand what you’re reading sometimes.

So, it’s a practical way to save money.  I wonder how many people could’ve had the opportunity to have the Gospel preached to them had Americans saved that $11 billion dollars they spent on self-help books.  Think of all the pastors out there doing missions work how much $11,000,000,000.00 would help them get the Gospel and make disciples of many nations who have yet to even hear the name of Jesus preached in their native tongues.

I believe that this is going to be an awesome series we’re getting into here, and I’m looking forward to taking a day by day approach to answering the question:  “Why Read The Bible.”

Interactive Study Questions:

This is the first time that we’re introducing “Interactive Study Questions”.  Do you know what that means?  I would like to know from those of you who are following along what YOU are getting out of this study.  Interactive means that this is an audience participation kind of series.  I want you to take these questions, write them down, and seriously take the time to answer them for yourselves.  I don’t want all of our messages to us writing and you reading.  I want them to encourage you to become active participants in these messages.  I’m going to be posting these questions as an introduction on Facebook, and I would love to see you guys answer these questions in the comments section.

  1. What is the power that Scripture has in our lives?
  2. If all scripture is inspired by God, what should our responsibility to it be?

That’s it.  Just two questions.  Can you handle it?

Conclusion & Prayer:

So, there you have it.  Our first message in this series has just been completed.  I believe the Lord has a lot to say to us about the importance of being in His Word, and it has to do with the fact that we are most definitely living in the perilous times that Paul described to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:1-5.  We simply have to have more than 12% of Christians reading the Bible every day.  It’s no wonder that the church is losing the battles of spiritual warfare, and the decline of morality even in the church reaches a depth that’s clearly offensive to God.  I said it a few times in the last series that the church needs to stop being so worried about offending the world, and more concerned about offending God.

This ministry is more concerned about offending God.  If you were hoping to find a seeker friendly ministry that doesn’t care what God thinks or about the Word of God then we’re not the ministry for you.  We want to always be accountable to the Word of God, and have it be the sole foundation for what we say, believe, write, and do.

Heavenly Father, we come before You to say that we are listening Lord God.  We hear You saying to us “comeback to My Word”.   I would ask, Father God, that You would burn a fire in us for Your Word, Lord God, that no water can put out, and a hunger and passion for Your Word that only reading, studying, and hearing Your Word would satisfy.  Help us, God, to not grow weary.  Help us Lord God to be strong in Your might, and the power of You.  Help us to be diligent and committed to Your Word.  Teach us, Father, things about You and Your Word that we haven’t known or thought of before.  Reveal Yourself to us through Your Word in a way that You’ve never reveled Yourself to us before.  Give us a desire for Your Word that we have never had before.  Lord God, we love You, we honor You and Your Word, and we praise You for all that You are going to accomplish in us and through us through this study, and through getting more firmly rooted, grounded, and established in Your Word.  We ask this of You in the name of Jesus…Amen & Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 14 of 14 – The Mind of Christ

Today’s Scripture:

Introduction:

Today concludes our series from Joyce Meyer’s 2005 Battlefield of the Mind Devotional book.  This turned out to be a pretty good series as far as I’m concerned.  I don’t know how the rest of you feel, but I learned a bit from it myself.  The whole point of this series leads us all the way today’s message, and as we read from Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth…it is possible to have the mind of Christ.  We know from the Bible that God is no respecter of person, right?  So, if that’s the case then if Paul can have the mind of Christ then we can too.

I really want to be sure that I do this message justice, and since I’m still a bit foggy from my nap after work this morning.  Let’s just take a moment to pray and invite the Holy Spirit to help me write this message, and you to receive it.  Amen?

Opening Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I come before You seeking the help of the Holy Spirit to pen this message.  I thank You, Father God, that Your Word always accomplishes that which it is sent out to do, and that it never returns void.  I thank You, Father God, that Your Word is timeless, and that it is always profitable to those who hear it, receive it, and do it.  I ask You, therefore, Lord to again make my fingers that as a pen of a ready writer that I may write only of the oracles of You, and through the supernatural ability in which You supply me through the Holy Ghost.  I ask, Father God, that You would sink this, and all the messages this series deep into the hearts and minds of the readers.  I am so grateful, Lord God for this opportunity to speak into many lives, hearts, and minister to many.  Some I am sure who I don’t even know are following, but You know them.  You know their names, You know their needs, and You know where they are in their walk with You.  I pray these messages strengthen them in their inner man, and give them encouragement to know that they aren’t alone on the journey to become more and more conformed to the image of Your Son.  I love You Lord, and ask these things in the name of Your Son…Jesus Christ…Amen.

Today’s Message:

Today’s scripture overwhelms many people. If these were not the words of the Bible, they wouldn’t believe it. As it is, most people shake their heads and ask, “How can this be?”

The first thing I feel is the need to repeat what I said in the introduction, and that is that while a verse like this may be overwhelming another verse comes to mind here.  “For there is no respect of persons with God.”  Romans 2:11 (KJV).   Therefore, if Paul can have the mind of Christ that means we can too.  Like we talked about for the last couple of messages it’s a choice.  We can choose to either walk in fear, doubt, and unbelief…or we can walk in faith, love, power, and have a sound mind.  Paul’s words to Timothy come to mind when he writes in 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV):  “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”  So, whether you are Paul and Barnabas, Timothy, or if it is just us.  If they can have the mind of Christ then we can too.

Some of the greatest Christian preachers of old like Smith Wigglesworth, A.W Tozer, Charles Spurgeon, and Oswald Chambers proved that you don’t have to be a New Testament writer to have the mind of Christ.  Again, if these men and I’m sure there’s some great women of the faith who had the mind of Christ as well…if they can have it…so too can we.

But, we don’t get it by our own strength, our own abilities, or even our own willpower.  It only comes by a continual washing of our minds with the Word of God.  That means we have to search the scriptures daily, and study to show ourselves approved.  That means that sometimes we seriously need to shut the television off, and open up our Bibles.  That means we have to say no to hanging out with our buddies, and actually getting up and going to church to be fed the Word of God.  We so NEED a return to the old days where people actually took time to study and read their Bibles.  Just so you know I’m not making this up.  Paul writes in Ephesians 5:26 (KJV) “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”.

Now I realize Paul was talking about husbands, and wives in that passage.  However, the mind is sanctified and cleansed by the washing of the water by the Word of God.  Paul writes:  “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” in Romans 12:2 (KJV).  How do you renew your mind?  By making sure that your constantly putting the Word of God in it.

Paul was not saying we’re perfect or that we’ll never fail. He was telling us, as believers in Jesus, the Son of God, we are given the mind of Christ. That is, we can think spiritual thoughts because Christ is alive within us. We no longer think the way we once did. We begin to think as He did.

The thing is, however that we can’t just be satisfied with receiving the mind of Christ we have to support it, cultivate it, water it, nurture it, and feed it.  Our minds need to have the Word of God spoken and read to it often.  We can think spiritual thoughts, we can have more spiritual thoughts than carnal thoughts, and we can have the mind that Christ has…but that only comes by a consistent and constant renewing of our minds and washing it with the  water of the Word of God.

The mind of Christ comes when we are believers, but it doesn’t stay by osmosis.  This is a consistent theme over the last few days, and I ever re-released a message yesterday:  “ THE TIME HAS COME BY CHRISTLIKE MINISTRIES ARKANSAS” that I urge you to read.  It was all about keeping a hunger for the Word of God.  Especially in the day and age in which we live because there’s so much garbage doctrine out there.  There are dangerous doctrine’s being preached, and no one knows the difference between good, sound doctrine, and false teaching because the don’t have a clue what the Word of God says.  Why?  Because they are in too much of a hurry to read it for themselves.

I have to stay rooted and grounded in the Word of God.  It’s very easy to have other thoughts invade our minds that go unchallenged by the Word of God, and suddenly before you know it there are strongholds in you mind.  The devil gets all up into our minds, and creates a whole bunch of havoc because we are too busy to wash our minds with the Word of God.  Jesus said to search the scriptures daily.  Why?  Let me show you the answer in the word of God.

  • 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” – 2 Corinthians 10: 4 – 5 (KJV)
  • “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)
  • “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 Amplified
  • “16  Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action),17  So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Amplified

This is certainly not an exhaustive list of all the reasons that the Word of God is so important to the minds of the believer, but need I remind you of what I said a few messages ago about the Word of God being the only offensive weapon we have when it comes to putting on the Armor of God.  Do you know why there are so many defeated Christians walking around today?  Not only do most of them go into the battle without their armor on, but they have no ammo to fight the enemy with.  As a former Marine I can tell you that while the body armor is important to have on the field of battle if you go into war without a weapon you aren’t going to win.

Do you know what the body of Christ does?  They go to church on Sunday if they can make it, and maybe they go on Wednesday nights also.  They might even go to a small group once in a while, but that’s usually the extent of the Bible that they get into them.  That would be the equivalent of a police officer going to his morning roll call meetings, and then going out to his patrol car without his weapons, handcuffs, or bullet proof vest.  Do you know what happens to that police officer in a gun fight?  He dies.  Do you know what happens to most Christians who are involved in a battle of spiritual warfare without their armor on or the sword of the spirit…which is the Word of God?  They die.

It’s written Proverbs that people die because of a lack of what?  Knowledge.  Knowledge of what?  The Word of God.  I can’t seem to emphasis this enough, and I can’t seem to get off of this topic.  I believe that the lack of the studying of the Word of God is what’s cause such horrible doctrines to be preached in pulpits all across the country, and on television these days.

I am convinced that if people really knew, studied and read the Word of God preachers like Joel Osteen wouldn’t be “rising stars” because there would be people standing on the watchtower screaming at the top of their lungs about how he was a false prophet and teacher.  Whenever someone stand up on television and says:  “If you send me this amount of money…I’ll send you this healing prayer clothe that will heal your diseases, and if you act now the Lord will give you a double part of your seed”  If more people knew the Word of God then they would know that stuff is a lie straight from the pit of hell, and like Donnie Swaggart would stand up and say that these jokers are nothing more than prosperity pimps.

This message today is a continuation of the one I re-released yesterday.   “THE TIME HAS COME BY CHRISTLIKE MINISTRIES ARKANSAS”.  We cannot survive these last days without being firmly rooted and grounded in the Word of God.  There are people every day being taken by every wind of doctrine that comes from their television, radio, and even from their own pastors every Sunday morning.  Satan stands up and preaches sermons from pulpits all across the United States because there is such a lack of knowledge of the true, unadulterated, and incorruptible seed of the Word of God.  No one stands up to challenge these ministers of the devil because they don’t know that what they’re preaching is false, lies, and that’s because of a serious lack of studying the Word of God.

I can’t even move on to the next quote yet because there is such an emphasis now on this need in the body of Christ to return to the Word.  To return to the old paths as in the days of Jeremiah.  “Thus says the Lord: Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.”  Jeremiah 6:16 (AMP).  I believe that this is the Holy Spirit sounding the alarm that we body of Christ needs to not just let people tell them us the Word of God says, but that it’s time that we read it for ourselves so that the Holy Spirit can teach us what it says.

When we have the Holy Spirit living and active within us, the mind of Christ is action. The mind of Christ is given to us to direct us in the right way. If we have His mind, we will think positive thoughts. We will think about how blessed we are–how good God has been to us.

This is where Joyce starts sounding like Joel Osteen.  The purpose of having the mind of Christ isn’t just so we’ll think good thoughts, but so that we have something to use when the lies of the devil come to try to torment our minds.  It’s not enough just to have positive thoughts, but about building up our most holy faith.  How do we build up our faith?  Well, again rather than have me answer that question let’s have the Word of God answer it.  “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”  Romans 10:17 NKJV.

However, Joyce and Joel are right in the sense that once we do have the mind of Christ then we will think better thoughts, but more importantly we will have a thoughts based upon faith.  Faith being the belief that God can and will do what’s promised in His Word in our lives.  But, how in the world are we to know what the promises are unless we read and hear about them from where…the Word of God.

Jesus was positive, in spite of being lied about, lonely, misunderstood, and a multitude of other negative things. He was deserted by His disciples when He needed them most, yet He remained positive–always able to offer an uplifting, encouraging word. Just being in His presence would suggest that all fear, negative thoughts, and discouraging hopelessness would evaporate into thin air.

See this is where I get upset with Joyce.  She ought to know better.  It’s not that Jesus went to some positive thinking seminar.  He had perfect faith.  He knew and believe all the time, all day, every day that God…His Father…and ours…heard Him.  One of my favorite passages in the Word of God is where Jesus is standing before Lazarus’ tomb, and says:  “”Father, I thank you that you have heard me.I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

Do you know why I believe the disciples were so interested in asking Jesus to teach them how to pray?  I imagine it’s because they often heard Him pray just like He did here before Lazarus’ tomb.  There was a boldness, confidence, and power to Jesus’ prayer.  Jesus expected results when He prayed.  Why?  Because He had some positive thinking class or seminar? NO.  Because He had faith.  He believed fully that when He spoke God would respond, and that God would perform that which He was seeking.  This is the mind that Christ had.  This is what He was trying to get across when He said that if we would just have the faith the size of a mustard seed we could SPEAK to whatever situation, mountain, or dead tree that’s in our lives…and it would obey us.

Does that happen by positive thinking?  NO.  It happens because we believe in our hearts that God is going to do just as we believe He said He would.  Yes, I do agree, like I said a moment ago that we can have the mind of Christ.  I do believe that Jesus never had a negative thought, I do  believe that Jesus always had a “positive” outlook, but the reason He had that was because He knew God’s Word…and because He knew God’s Word…Jesus was full of faith.  You do know that Jesus had to act and live and walk by faith while He was operating in His earthly ministry right?  So, yes, we most certainly can change from a negative to a positive mindset, but this goes deeper than just being a positive thinker…this goes into having such knowledge of the Word of God that we know like Jesus.

I’m not picking on Joyce.  I love her teaching, but she’s one of those that walks a fine line of preaching too much prosperity, too much easy listening, and is starting to sound a little too much like Joel Osteen today.  I am pointing out Joel Osteen as a false teacher, and someone whose teachings you ought to avoid at all costs.  There is nothing good about this man’s teachings, and if you want to know more just go on YouTube and listen to the video clips of his interviews with CNN’s Larry King.  If that doesn’t make you want to vomit then maybe you need to repent and return to Christ yourself.

The first time I heard of this interview was through watching old clips of Donnie Swaggart who had the entire transcript of the interview, and as he read the questions by Larry King and the responses by Joel Osteen I began to get more and more disgusted.  Larry King sounded more like a preacher than Joel Osteen did.  I think Larry King was stunned by some of the answers Joel gave during that interview, and so was I.

The main thing, friends is that we need to have a hunger for the Word of God like never, and I think now more than any time in church history we are so close to the rapture that we really, really need to buckle down, get the Word of God in us, and share it with a world full people who are on their way to hell.  It’s also necessary to get the Word of God into us as a defense against the garbage that’s coming out of pulpits all across America whether on television, radio, or in churches across the country.

Don’t’ get your Bible education from TBN…get it from the Holy Spirit…Amen?

Conclusion & Prayer:

Well, I certainly didn’t intend to go this long, but the Lord most definitely had some things that He really needed to get across in this message.  I hope I did Him proud, and I again pray that all who read this message would receive this deep in their hearts, and that the Holy Spirit would seal it in them so that the devil cannot come and steal it away…In Jesus Name…Amen.

The mind of Christ in us is positive. So when we fall for the opportunity to be negative about something, we should instantly discern that we are not operating with the mind of Christ. God wants us to be lifted up. It’s the enemy of our soul who wants us pressed down–depressed. We have many opportunities to think negative thoughts, but that’s not the mind of Christ at work in us. We don’t have to accept those thoughts. They are not ours!

I do agree with this.  The mind of Christ was full of boldness, confidence, assurance, and faith.  Our minds can be too, and they only get that way be continually feeding upon the Word of God.  So, I hope that we are all challenged to spend more time reading the Bible, and less time reading other things that have no eternal value.

I have the Word of God every where.  I have it coming to my emails.  I have it coming on my Facebook pages.  I have it on my Twitter account.  I am listening to good, solid Bible teaching all the time now (thanks to my fast from worldly entertainment), and it’s also in good worship music.  I do everything I can to make sure that I’ve got interaction with the Word of God all day…everyday.

It’s not enough for me to hear it on Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings, and ever other Friday night at small group.  I need the Word.  As a minister I am charged and commanded to “preach the Word”, and I can’t do that if I don’t know it.  So, the Word of God is really the theme of today’s message, and I think I know exactly what series we’re going to get into next…a series about…Why We Should Read the Word of God.  I think I’ve done it before…but that’s been in the majority of my messages lately so I guess we need to go through it again…and see what else the Lord would have to say to us through the series.

Pray: Lord, I truly want to be aware of the mind of Christ in my life, and I want to be aware of it every minute of my waking day. Help me to open myself only to know Your will and to push away the old mindsets, the thinking that will lead me down the wrong path. I ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Final Word on the Series:

Well, friends, we have just completed a 14 day series from the book Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer.  I hope that it’s been a help to you, and I pray that you have been encouraged, challenged, and uplifted by this series.  I hope that you’ve come to know that we truly can have the mind of Christ, and I hope that you’ll pass these messages on to your friends.  I have enjoyed writing and learning from this series right along with you.  I hope you know that I am learning myself from these messages.  Many times I’ll have to go back and re-read some of them because I don’t always know what the Lord says through me, and how good some of it is until I go back and re-read the message.

I may have to read this one a couple of times.  I might even print this one out.  Feel free, by the way to do so as well.  Our messages are posted free of charge.  So, if you read one (or two) that you like or feel can be of help to someone…please print it out and pass it along.

Thank you for joining me during this series, and I hope that you’ll continue to come back to study with us some more.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.” (1 Corinthians 16:23-24)
Blessing & Grace to you

The Time Has Come by Christlike Ministries Arkansas

Message Scripture:

  • “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but will heap for themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” – 2 Timothy 4: 3-4

Introduction:

I hardly  believe we’ve been around long enough to have what I’d classify as a “Classic Ministry Message”, but I believe that in light of the study we’ve been doing on the Battlefield of the Mind that this one bares repeating.  I wrote this quite a while back, but I think that this might be a good time to bring this message back.

Today’s Message:

I recently read something that changed my perspective on what these verses really are talking about.
Usually when these verses are preached upon the emphasis is always on sound doctrine, but I agree with what I read. The emphasis really should be on “they will not endure” specifically…the word “endure”.
The word “endure” translates to the word for tolerate.
In this Burger King generation where everything has to be quick, my way, and entertainment…the church has sadly obliged people. The church has sacrificed sound doctrine for the sake of church growth.

There are some seriously dangerous doctrines and ministries out there that are more interested in making a buck, filling seats, selling books, and being seeker friendly…and this is all done at the cost of the Word of God.  We all who are in ministry are exhorted by Paul to “Preach the Word”.

Their services have entertainment value, but they offer very little in terms of eternal value because they refuse to preach the Word of God.  They also refuse to take the correct biblical stance on major issues…like gay marriage, Jesus being the only way to salvation, and they are very afraid to offend people…but have no problem when it comes to offending God.

I can only imagine what Jesus would write-through John today.  I read the seven letters to the seven churches that He spoke to John in the Book of Revelation, and I can only imagine that the rebukes to some of these ministries and churches would be much…much more stern.  In fact, where the Lord had threatened to remove some of the lamp stands of those churches…I believe Jesus wouldn’t threaten to remove them…He would walk right up…and remove the lamp stand.

I can tell you this.  I believe there are going to be an amazing number of preachers who are going to stand before God on the day of the Great White Throne Judgment, and they are going to be rebuked sternly for leading thousands astray before they are sent to hell.  Remember Jesus said that it would be better for them to tie a stone around their ankles, and drown in the sea than to harm one of His children.  I think there’s going to be a large majority of pastors who think they’re going to heaven that are going to be shocked when Jesus says:  “You denied me before man, and now I’m denying you before my Father.  Away from Me you workers of iniquity…I never knew you.”

I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t want Jesus to say that to me.  So, I  am committed to preaching the Word.  I am committed to taking stances on subjects like Gay Marriage, Abortion, and Jesus being THE only way to salvation the same way the Bible teaches them.

  • Gay Marriage is wrong, it’s an abomination, and no matter what…there are no gray areas on this matter.  The Bible is clear, and that’s the stance and side I’m going to be on.
  • Abortion is wrong.  As soon as a baby is conceived that means it’s a life, and no matter when it becomes a fetus or what anyone else wants to call it…as soon as a baby is conceived it is a life.  When you take that life it is murder, and no where is it okay to murder.  So, as far as the Bible is concerned Abortion is murder…and that’s the stance I have taken as well.
  • Everyone is going to heaven.  No…they are not.  In John 14:6 Jesus says:  “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  No man comes unto the Father, but by Me.”  There are no gray areas here neither.  This verse is not open to many interpretations…there is only ONE conclusion to draw from this verse…the ONLY way someone becomes a believe and is assured of eternal life in heaven is if they believe in their hearts and confess with their mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord.  Therefore, since the Bible says that’s the ONLY way to heaven…then I believe that the road to heaven is only as wide as Jesus’ shoulders.  If you have never confessed Christ as Lord then you are not going to heaven unless or until you do.

There are many other areas that I could speak on, but those are the main ones that seem to come up in conversation.  I used to be a big fan of Joel Osteen until I heard the interview he once did on CNN’s Larry King Live.

Osteen: Jesus Isn’t The Only Way

If I didn’t hear this with my own ears I wouldn’t have believed he said this, but he did.  This is the kind of thing that’s dangerous to the body of Christ.  He is a “rising star” in Evangelism.  A number one selling author, but when it comes to the truth of God’s Word…he had the greatest opportunity to really give people the TRUE Gospel…and he chose to not offend people and offend God instead.  Here are the words from the person who posted this video.

For Osteen not to say that the unbeliever is on his/her way to burn in hell for eternity, when the vast majority of Larry King’s viewers are unsaved, atheists, heathens, etc., is one of the most egregious sins a so-called ‘man of God’ can commit.
To say that Jesus told us not to judge another person’s heart is an out right lie. Jesus said that “every tree is known by his own fruit.” Luke 6:44; “for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” Mat. 12:34. Jesus told us to “judge righteous judgment.” John 7:24. “Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.” 1 Tim. 5:20.

There’s more that this poster wrote, but the point is that Jesus is not “a” way to salvation, but He is THE way of salvation.

I am not going to spend more time on this.  There’s a lot more I could go into, but I’m not going to for the sake of time.  I don’t want this to be a message about false teachers and prophets…and I’m certainly not picking on Joel Osteen…but what I am saying is that this was one of the “rising stars” of Evangelism…and he’s chosen to take a path of inclusion and least resistance instead of the path of truth, righteousness, and standing upon the Word of God.

Part of the blame is on the church because sound doctrine requires time, work, and study…and people have become too busy to do that.
The blame also falls on pastors who have become so concerned with attendance, finances, and making sure they are entertainment for a congregation that they will lose if it goes too far into the first half of the Cowboys game.
Also, in this desire of pastors to entertain is a turning away from the truth of God’s Word.

Some pastors are so busy doing everything else in the ministry that they short cut it when it comes to their messages.  What do I mean by short cut?  There are many online resources for pastors that have ready-made sermons complete with scriptures, notes, illustrations, and it’s all done.  Just pick a subject, select a sermon, print it out, and you have a sermon.

Preaching the Word of God does require work.  I may take quotes from other people’s studies, but the commentary is my own.  The commentary I rely upon the Holy Spirit to give me unction and utterance for.   I also do the best I can to make sure what I’m writing is sound, biblical truth…and it’s my own work.  The quotes may not be, but the commentary is all mine.

I can sit and write anywhere from an hour to an entire afternoon based upon what I feel the Lord is leading me to do.  I may write one message, I may copy and paste a Tweet, or I may do like I’m going to wind up doing today and writing three separate messages…but they are all written by inspiration of the Holy Ghost…and when you write that way it’s hard to not take a stand upon the Word of God because that’s exactly what the Holy Spirit does.  Leads and guides us into all truth…what is all truth…the Word of God.

Most Christians today are hard pressed to explain what they believe, give scripture to back up what they believe, and do not know the basic foundational truths of Christianity.
Why? Because the time has come. The time has come where people prefer three songs and a short half hour message about some passage in Rick Warren’s latest book over really taking time to worship & meet with God, get a message full of sound life altering doctrine, and then doing something really peculiar…studying the Bible for themselves.

There’s a whole bunch that could be said here.  Let’s take a bit to see what I can pull out of my message.

  1. Most Christians today have no idea what the basic foundational truths of Christianity are.  They have no understanding of who or what the Trinity is, they don’t know what the ministry of the Holy Spirit is or what He does, they don’t know water baptism from baptism in the Holy Ghost, they have no belief or faith in Divine Healing, and I’m guessing that you’re getting the point of what I’m getting at by now.
  2. Most services today are a couple of songs, and a half hour message about half a verse, and what Rick Warren’s book says about it.
  3. There isn’t hardly any mention of sin, righteousness, and there’s no real challenge to anyone’s lives about anything.  Why?  Because challenging people will offend them, and offending people will cause them to leave…and the almighty dollar is at stake here too.  Here’s a simple equation:  Fewer people = less money.

I’m not going to labor the point here again.  I think that by now you’ll have an understanding of where I’m going with all of this.  I just wanted to give you some bullet points, things to think about, and maybe some motivation to get out your Bibles…dust them off…and start reading them again.

Conclusion:

I, however, am still called by God to preach the Word. I still get out my Bible to study & show myself approved, and the football game…well…I can check the scores later.
God is a priority…scratch that…is THE priority in my life. I want sound doctrine, I hope that I teach sound doctrine, and I don’t go to church to be entertained…I go to meet with Jesus.
I’m tired of prosperity, I’m tired of feel good religion.
I’m tired of empty messages.
I want a real authentic walk with God…that only comes from revelation from the truth of the sound doctrine of God’s Word

As the pastor of Christlike Ministries NWA this is my pledge and promise to all who visit, like us, and read the messages.  I am called by God to “preach the Word”, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  I want to have a real authentic ministry that if Jesus would to write me one of those letters like He did to the churches in Revelations I’d like Him to write a good letter.  I’m sure I’m not perfect, and that He’d have some things against me…but for the most part I would like to have Him have more good things to say…and I want one of them to be that we never strayed from His Word.

I hope that I can come back to this message again knowing that it’s still a timeless message, and that I’ve adhered to the pledge that I just gave.  I hope that when I come back to this message I can be proud of the fact that I stayed true to the Word of God, and hopefully that I won’t have to spend so much time writing about people who haven’t.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 13 of 14 – Suspicious of Suspicion

Today’s Scriptures:

  • 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Introduction:

This study will be wrapping up tomorrow, but no study series is complete without taking time to stop over in 1 Corinthians 13…the love chapter.  If you ever want a picture of how God loves us…just read this chapter.  If you ever want a picture…husbands…as to how we are to love our wives…read this chapter.  In reality…this is also the way we’re to love one another whether people are in the body of Christ or not.

So, today’s message is titled Suspicious of Suspicion, and I’m really interested to know how Joyce gets the title for this message of our this passage of scripture.  So, I’m not going to be long-winded here in the introduction.  Grab your Bibles, read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, and let’s see how Joyce ties love and suspicion together.

Today’s Message:

In today’s scripture, these words about love are familiar to most of us, but I can honestly say that living them has not always been easy for me. As a child, I was not exposed to this kind of love–in fact, I was taught to be suspicious of everyone. I was told that the motives of other people were not to be trusted.

Right out of the gate Joyce helps us to understand where she’s going with the title of this message.  I started out as a child wanting to believe the best in everyone, and I did.  As a young adult, however, that sense of purity and wanting to believe the best in everyone turned into believing and trusting no one…not even God.  I had a skeptical view of everyone, and never really got to trust that anyone’s motives were pure at all…not even my own.  That is not a good place for an aspiring man of God to be.  I was never truly able to allow the love of God that has been shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit out because I had such a hard time not being suspicious and skeptical of anyone.

After all, when the people you believe the best out of turn around and burn your behind time and time again…you tend to learn to do things to stop being burned.  One of those things is to put up walls, and build a nice protective shield of skepticism.  You learn to keep everyone…including those closest to you at arms distance, and instead of bringing them in during the times you need them the most…you push them away further because eventually you learn the only one you can truly depend upon is yourself.

That was my attitude for most of my adult life, and even since I’d rededicated my life to the Lord my attitude was that everything would be handled by my and God.  Which is a great thing for developing your relationship with God, but not so great for developing relationships with other people.  The mentality of living life just me and God really taught me that I can truly rely upon God, and I learned much from life on life’s terms that way.  However, I can also tell you that it was a lonely time because I had relatively little human contact, and those I did have contact with were only allowed to be so close to me…because of my suspicions and skepticism.  I knew that the Lord wouldn’t ever hurt me, I knew that God was never out to hurt me, but when it came to other people…I began to assume that everyone would hurt me…or that I would hurt everyone I came into contact with…and I would because I never learned how to express the love in my heart towards others.

In earlier messages I may have mentioned that probably the first 36 years of my life could be summed up in the words of Johnny Cash’s version of the song “Hurt”.

When I Wrote My Story

When you hear a song like this and tears roll down your face because you relate to it in so many ways that you just can’t explain it…you reach a point where you realize that the wrong person has written the story of your life.  At least, I figured that out the first time I heard this version of this song.  I know.  It originally was release by Nine Inch Nails, but the reflective tone in which Johnny Cash sings this song caught me, and made me realize that I needed to put the pen down…and let God start writing.

While it is wise to be aware of people’s motives, we must be careful that we don’t allow our suspicious nature to negatively affect our feelings about everyone. An overly suspicious nature can poison your mind and affect your ability to love and accept other people.

Sadly just as I was able to see my life in light of a Johnny Cash song I can also relate to what Joyce writes here about having such a skeptical mind about everyone’s motives and intentions that it saps your ability to truly love anyone else because you never really learn to trust anyone else.  When your constantly skeptical and suspicious of people then there’s no room for the ability to trust, and when there’s no trust there’s no relationship.  You spend most of your life waiting for the other shoe to drop so that when that person hurts you, and it’s inevitable that they will…even though it still stings…it hurts less and less because you shield your heart, and it becomes hardened and calloused…and even worse…eventually you don’t have emotions…you become numb.

Consider this example.
Suppose a friend approaches you after a church service, and says, “Do you know what Doris thinks about you?” Then the friend tells you every detail of the things Doris said. The first problem is that a true friend wouldn’t share such information. And the second problem is that with an already suspicious mind, you now believe secondhand information.
Suppose that one day in church, Doris is sitting just a few rows in front of you, praising the Lord. Immediately you think, “She’s such a hypocrite.”
Then the Holy Spirit directs your thoughts to your own condition, and the fact that you were praising the Lord while harboring bad feelings toward Doris.

Yes.  Has anyone other than me ever been in this place?  I’ll admit I’ve been here a time or two.  You know what happens and how this example ends just like I do:

Didn’t Jesus tell us to make peace with others before we present our gifts to Him? (See Matthew 5:24.)
Convicted by these words of Jesus, you apologize to Doris for the bad feelings you have toward her…and she stares at you in absolute shock. Then you realize your mistake. You misinterpreted the information your friend shared with you about Doris, allowing the devil to turn you against a wonderful, godly woman.

Here’s a quick tip that’s free of charge.  Never believe second-hand information.  Don’t listen to gossip, and don’t be one who spreads gossip.  The Bible has a lot to say in Proverbs about being a talebearer.  I would encourage you to take your concordance and look up “talebearer” and see how God views those kinds of people.  Never…ever accept second-hand information as fact…especially in this situation.  I have learned to go directly to the person in question, and let them know that an un-named source had brought it to my attention that you have said this about me.  Give them the opportunity to give merit or disprove what was said…and rely upon the Holy Spirit to help you to discern whether or not that person is being truthful.

Don’t go confronting someone with a skeptical ear, and don’t go there angry.  Take some time to seek the Lord, and then find out if what they supposedly said was said or misinterpreted.  It saves a lot of hassle, and it’s much better to do it that way than any other way.

This is a good example of how suspicion can cripple relationships and destroy our joy while it leads us astray.

So, now that I’ve put down the pen to my life, and allowed God to write the rest of my life’s story it’s been a better road.  I am still learning to overcome that suspicious mind, and that’s one of those giants I’m going to have to defeat before I enter into the promised land that God has for me.  I definitely have to do so before I wind up serving the Lord full-time.  You can’t serve the Lord with a suspicious mind…I have to get back to the place I was as a child…always believing the best in people.  There is such a thing as “healthy skepticism”, but for the most part I like to refer to that as discernment from the Holy Ghost.  Oh…and there’s a new song to my life as well.

He Became My King Forever

Let me just take a moment to ask you a simple question to close out this message…Who has the pen and is writing the story of your life?

Conclusion & Prayer:

It took me a while to overcome a lifetime of suspicions, but I finally learned that when we love God’s way, we have no place for suspicions of others.

As I shared, it has taken me a while to overcome that myself, and I am still overcoming the skepticism that had invaded my life for so long.  It became a save and protective shell that really was more like an egg-shell than that of a turtle.  However, the longer I worked at that shell the harder it got.  The good news is that the Word of God says that we overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of our testimony.  So, I believe that God’s softening my shelf and my heart, and that eventually I’ll get to having the heart of flesh that ministers need in order to effectively minister to the sheep in which the Lord entrusts to our care.

Pray: Lord, I thank You for showing me how to overcome my suspicious nature by teaching me how to love others with Your kind of love. Thank You, Jesus, for being patient with me and for being my great example. Amen

I guess I feel like posting songs that reflect God’s work in my life:

Thank You God for Redeeming Me!!!

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 12 of 14 – God Willing

Today’s Scripture:

  • 13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” – James 4:13-15

Introduction:

There’s just two more days before we wrap up this short 14 Day sample from the book Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer.  I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the messages as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.  Sister Joyce may have some questionable content to her messages at times, but this devotional has been really good.  There’s some really awesome points in it, and the main thing that I keep coming back to is that we need to really have a serious love affair with the Word of God.  The Word of God is the single most important weapon we have when it comes to the battlefield of our minds, and as you may well know (or not know) the real heart of this ministry is getting you to read your own Bibles and establish good study habits.

So, today’s message comes from what Joyce titled it as D.V which is LatinDeo volente,’ which means ‘God willing.  So, let’s see what this has to do with enabling us to better understand how to win on the battlefield of our minds.

Today’s Message:

He told me that he and his wife were missionaries to Chad, Africa, and then he said, “We plan to return in January, D.V.”

I didn’t know what D.V. meant, but I didn’t say anything.

As he described his evangelism program for the interior of the country, he kept saying, “D.V.”

Finally, I asked, “What does D.V. mean?”

“It’s a Latin phrase I learned in school, and it means a great deal to me,” he said. “It stands for ‘Deo volente,’ which means ‘God willing.’”

You know.  This is one of those phrases that comes up in a Christian’s vocabulary that usually goes something like this.  “If God is willing.”  or “I’m hoping to be able to do this…God willing.”  The implication here is really not whether God is willing, but whether or not we believe that God is willing.  This goes right along side yesterday’s message about defeating doubt.  Normally whenever I’ve personally uttered the phrase “God willing” it’s because I’m not quite convinced that He is.  Now I know some people will say things like “I’ll live to be 85…God willing.”  However, I’m coming to understand that at least in the context of the Battlefield of the Mind that we are dealing with the doubtful side of whether or not we believe that God is willing to help us, deliver us, or bless us.  The short and simple answer to that question is…YES…God is willing.  The question to you then becomes do you believe God is willing or don’t you?

As we talked, I realized how seriously he meant D.V. He said he had great ideas about things he wanted to see in Chad, but more than that, he wanted to be sure his ideas were in line with God’s. “When I say D.V., that’s a reminder to me–it’s my way of saying, ‘This is what I’d like. Is it okay with You, Lord?’”

It is, however, a good idea when we come across things that we’d either like to do, like to have, or like to be…and seek God before we do and not seeking Him after we do…and find out God wasn’t willing.  See, this is where Proverbs 3:5-6 come back into play.  It says that we are to acknowledge God is ALL  of our ways not some, not a few, and not a couple…but every single way of ours we ought to acknowledge and seek God.

There are a lot of boasting people out there–they decide what they want and expect everything to run smoothly. That can be a trick of Satan. If he can get them to focus on tomorrow or next year, they don’t have to deal with the problems in their lives right now. They can live in a world of only good things that will take place in the future. Isn’t that like driving a car down the highway and ignoring what’s right in front of us because we’re focused on the traffic signal five blocks ahead? We’re setting ourselves up for a wreck.

I have learned to not boast about anything I do.  Not even writing these messages.  Yes, I may re-read a certain message, and think that it was a pretty good message.  However, the only reason that these messages are any good isn’t because I’m writing them, but because the Lord is speaking through me by these messages.  It’s all by inspiration of the Holy Ghost that I write, and only by the supernatural ability in which He supplies that I can write messages that are good, sound, clear, and have any power in them at all.  It’s not by my might, power, or writing ability…in fact the only reason I have the ability to write is because the Lord blessed me with the ability to do so.  Therefore, I have no reason or right to boast about any of it…because even the ability for me to write these messages comes from Him.

Don’t you know that obtaining the understanding that even the ability to write comes from God manages to keep me grounded and humble.  The truth is I’ve always known that I had the ability to write, but I never really looked at it with a prideful spirit.  In fact, until I started doing this I always kind of felt like even though my writing was pretty good it would never really pass as being “professional”.  Here is a bit of truthful disclosure here.

When I received a word of knowledge from Pastor Stephen Robbins of No Greater Love Family Church that I would some day use my ability to write for the Lord.  I thought in context of magazines, devotional articles, and books.  I’d looked at the way people write articles, devotionals, and even when I began looking at other people’s blogs before I started doing this and think that there’s no way my writing will work because it doesn’t look like anything I had or have ever seen.  I still feel as though my writing is woefully inadequate, and even when I get someone who likes something I write…you know your heart is in the right place when you get a compliment and you let them know in no uncertain terms that if God wasn’t in this…my writing would be garbage.

I’ll finish this message by returning to a point that I was getting into at the beginning of this message, and that’s this.  God is willing, but only if we are willing to believe.  How many times did someone ask Jesus if He was willing to make them whole or heal them…only to have Him say “nope, not going to do it.”  He doesn’t say that does He?  No, most of the time He says “I am willing.”  However, there are some people who He turned the question to them and asked if they were willing.  Willing to do what?  Believe.  He asked if they were willing to believe that He was indeed willing to heal them or deliver them or set them free.

So, again I will just simply turn the question to you this way.  Whatever it is that you are seeking God for…the question isn’t is God willing to do it, but are you willing to believe in God?

Conclusion & Prayer:

Jesus promised us a life of abundance (see John 10:10). But we can’t enter into that abundance if we’re not giving our lives fully to Him. Don’t spend today planning tomorrow and avoiding the issues that confront you now.

There is one of the steps that I really love about the 12 Step Recovery Programs, and that is step three.  For those of you who don’t know what step three of the Anonymous programs are this is it:  “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.”  They usually have one slogan that I don’t mind at all, and that’s the slogan “Let Go and Let God.” Which is the point that we’re getting to here at the end of this message.  We must give our lives completely over to the care of God.  We have to really learn to put Proverbs 3:5-6 into practice because as we do that He directs our paths.

Don’t you know the easiest way to know if God is willing is to follow the path and steps that He’s leading us down?

Pray: My heavenly Father, please help me live today. Whether I actually say the words D.V. or not, remind me that Your will is more important than anything in my life. Help me not to allow Satan to get me thinking so much about tomorrow that I fail to live today in a way that pleases You. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 11 of 14 – Defeating Unbelief

Today’s Scripture:

  • 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9

Introduction:

The biggest area that we need to learn how to win in is the battle between our ability to believe and trust God, and our doubt and unbelief.  The source of our doubt and unbelief really doesn’t have to do with God, but us.  I believe that part of the reason for doubt and unbelief is we base what we’re seeking God for on whether or not we are worthy of receiving whatever it is we’re seeking Him for.  Furthermore, I also believe that it’s a feeling that’s really a lie from the devil, and that’s the thought that I know God can and will…but I don’t know that He will for me.

So, let’s see where Joyce takes today’s message about defeating unbelief, and see how we can get more victory in our lives…Amen?

Today’s Message:

Sometimes we unintentionally give the wrong impression about spiritual warfare. We know that our enemy is the devil and that we must fight daily to win, but that’s not everything. If the Christian life were nothing but battles, it would be discouraging to fight every hour of every day.

I know that I’m certainly not the only one who has walked with the Lord, gone through some struggles, and thought that “I just can’t win”.  That’s the truth.  We can’t win, and usually the reason we get to this point is quite simple.  We’re not really relying upon God’s strength, guidance, or direction.  If we’re truthful, and I am being so…we usually do it half and half.  What do I mean by that?  I mean we use half of God’s strength, and half of ours.  The silly thing is we know through trial and error time and time again…our way doesn’t work, but yet we find ourselves laying down battles for the Lord to fight…only to turn around and pick them right back up again.

Why do we do this?  The simple answer is that we’re into fear, doubt, and unbelief.  We may have even known, and had some victories with the Lord.  Still, there are just some things that we (myself included) just can’t seem to leave at the foot of the Cross isn’t there?  I can’t imagine what I would’ve been like had I been one of the Israelites being lead out of Egypt.  Spending all that time wandering in the wilderness because of doubt, and unbelief.  I would like to think that somehow I may have been one of the few who had enough sense to see the manna from heaven, water from a stone, and parting of the Red Sea…and thought at the very least…there must be something to this Promised Land thing…and I would hope that I would be one of those who had the sense not to worship the golden calf.

The Christian life is one of joy and peace. God gives us a great sense of fulfillment, and we’re at rest because we know we honor Him by the way we live.

Don’t you know it’s taken me almost my entire life to figure out that the joy and peace I was seeking all my life…even during my walk with God…is only accessed by faith.  The only way to true rest is to accept Christ’s invitation in Matthew 11:28-30.  The only way to live in peace is to truly learn to cast ALL my cares upon the Lord, and realize that He really does care for me…and about my situations.  I can almost imagine Him looking down upon me sometimes saying to Jesus:  “I wonder how long it’s gonna take Bryan to realize I AM the only One who can do what he’s trying to do.  I wonder how long it’ll be before he realizes he has to set this at the foot of the Cross.”  Now, I realize that’s a ridiculous statement because I’m certain God never wonders about anything…because…well…He knows everything.

But Joyce is absolutely right.  Don’t you know that the times in my life I’m the most stressed is because even though I’m in ministry I still have doubts that God will take care of a certain situation, or the dreaded thought that He’s not taking care of it on my time-table so I feel the need to help Him out.  Yes, I realize that God doesn’t need my help, but sometimes I think that He forgets to ask.  Obviously I know that’s a ridiculous statement to make also…God never forgets a thing…unless it’s my sins that are covered by the Blood of Jesus.

In today’s scripture, Peter wrote to Christians about their enemy–warning them and urging them to be vigilant, which is where we often put the emphasis. Just before he wrote those words, however, he said, “Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully” (v. 7). We must remind ourselves of God’s love for us.

It was said a few times by a few different preachers that said that often times we relate to our Heavenly Father the way we relate to our earthly father.  I agree with that to a certain extent, but eventually I think we have to come to the conclusion that we are extremely valuable to God.  How do I know this?  You don’t lay down your life for something that isn’t worth dying for.  You don’t sacrifice all the Jesus sacrificed just on a whim.  You certainly don’t sacrifice yourself like He did for people you just kind of care about.  God loves us, and we get a picture of this in Matthew 7…I’m not going to include it for the sake of time…but if you’d like a good picture of God as our Father…read Matthew 7…and also 1 John 4.

Satan tries to destroy our faith with lies like: “If God really cared about you, why would He make you go through this trial?” “If God truly loved you, would He treat you this way?” If he can make you think you’re not loved or that God doesn’t have your best interest at heart, he can plant tiny seeds of unbelief.

Here Joyce gets to a point that I was loosely trying to make, and that’s the lies that the devil tells us.  The truth is that all the devil has for us is lies.  He has nothing to offer us other than deceit.  After all, he is the father of lies, and the Word of God says that there is no truth in him at all.

So, when we’re going through stuff, or it’s taking longer for God to grant a request we’ve made or whatever the case may be…that’s the exact opportune time that the devil looks for to come in and try to steal, kill and destroy our faith.  Thing of it is that’s really again the same lie that he tempted Eve with…he got Eve to have enough doubt creep to where she began to buy the lie that maybe God really was holding out on them.  That is THE lie the devil told Eve.  God said you will die, but you surely won’t.  God said you can eat of any tree in the garden except for this one…He’s withholding something from you.  Don’t you think that you deserve to be able to eat from whatever tree you want…I mean if God loves you so much why can you eat from every tree but this one.

See, that’s all the devil has.  So, maybe you’re like me, and your going through a period where you’re unemployed.  The bills are piling up, and Christmas is on the way.  You’ve been out seeking work, but every door you knock on is either closed or slammed in your face.  In the mail comes a disconnection notice for the electricity, the cable company is about to shut off your cable, the rent is due, and no one seems to want to give you any kind of opportunity.  At first you had faith, but after a while you begin to wonder if faith is enough…and that’s when the devil comes in.  “If God really loved you don’t you think He’d open a door for you?  The lies just keep coming don’t they?

So, what do you do at that moment?  That’s exactly why yesterday’s message is so important.  You have to know God’s Word.  You have to have God’s Word in your heart so that when the fiery darts of the devil come at you…you can lift up your shield of faith.  You have to be able to have the assurance of your salvation…putting on your helmet.  You have to know the Word of God so when the devil starts shooting you have something to shoot back with.  That’s what Jesus did in Matthew 4…the devil came at Him with a few tricks at His weakest point, and every temptation the devil threw at Jesus…He responded with the Word of God.  The devil even tried to use misinterpreted Scriptures to tempt Jesus, and he will do the same to us.  Yes, friends, the devil does know what the bible says, but he knows how the story ends…and that’s why he’s doing everything he can to get us to believe that we’re not loved.  He’s going to do everything he can to distract us from the truth of God’s Word…friends the devil doesn’t want you to KNOW God’s Word.

That’s why he does everything he can to give you excuses to not pick it up, and study it for yourselves.  The truth is I don’t want you to read what I write at face value.  I want you to read the scriptures along with what I write because that’s the only way you are going to really know whether I’m writing good sound doctrine or not.  I want YOU to search the scriptures daily, and the hope really is that you’ll get a better understanding of what God’s Word is saying by reading these messages.

The Word of God is our main weapon, and if we don’t know what it says it’s like carrying an empty gun into battle.  Like I said yesterday prayer is wonderful, but if you really want to have a powerful prayer life…then you have to know the Word of God.  Start praying God’s Word over your situations and circumstances.  That’s what I have to do when I get discouraged…I have to do like David and Paul did and build myself up by speaking the Word of God.

“Greater is He that’s in me than he that’s in the world.”, “If God is for me than none can be against me.”, “If God is for me, and people come against me they’re really coming against Him who sent me”.” , “I have the love of God shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit.”,  “I can do all things through Christ who is my strength.”, “He who has started a good work in me will complete it.”, “God is my refuge and strong tower.”, and once you start speaking that stuff out…faith arises.  Why?  Faith comes by hearing…and by hearing what…the Word of God.

So…I again urge you to get out your Bibles, dust them off, and get into them…that’s if you already aren’t.

Conclusion & Prayer:

When struggles, trials, and hardships come your way–and they always do–you have a choice. You can heed Peter’s words and give God your cares, worries, and concerns. No matter how dark the night or how evil the situation, you must remind yourself that God is not only present with you in those situations, but He also loves you and will provide for you.

I have lived on both sides of those choices, and it’s no secret that the best side to be on is when you trust God.  I have spent enough time in misery, stressed out, and down right depressed.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of that stuff.  I want the peace, joy, and rest that comes from trusting totally in Him.  I want that peace that surpasses all understanding, and the only way I can get there is for me to stay rooted and grounded in God’s Word.

Pray: Dear heavenly Father, the enemy often tries to fill me with unbelief and make me deny Your powerful love for me. But like Abraham, I stand firm on Your promises. Thank You for the comfort I find in Your assurance that You’re always with me. Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 10 of 14 – Be Careful What You Think

Today’s Scriptures:

  • 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” – Psalm 1:2-3
  • 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” – Psalm 119:11
  • “ I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.” – Psalm 119:15

Introduction:

We’re almost finished with this series, and today we’re getting into being careful about what we think.  “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.” (Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)).

There is a reason studying the Word of God is so important to us as believers, and that’s because the mind is the battlefield where our war between our spirit and our flesh takes place.  That’s why Joyce calls it the Battlefield of the Mind.  How many of you know that you cannot win a battle if you don’t have any weapons?  The Word of God is our weapon for the spiritual battle that’s taking place in our minds.  (Ephesians 6:10 – 18).

Today, we read three scriptures about meditating upon the Word of God.  Paul exhorts Timothy to “study to show thyself approved” (2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)).  David writes in the Psalms “thy word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against thee”.  I could post a dozen or more scriptures just on meditating upon the Word of God.  “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8 (KJV)).

There’s a reason for all this insistence on making sure we have a firm foundational knowledge of the Word of God, and it’s the very reason and mission behind Christlike Ministries Arkansas…we need to know the Word of God because it’s our weapon against the wiles of the devil.  I don’t want you to just read my messages, but get out your Bibles and read the scriptures with it.  That’s why I post the scriptures.  I don’t want you to just take my word for what’s being written…I want you to be an active participant and read the Word of God for self.

This is the mission statement for Christlike Ministries NWA:  “To assist believers in developing their relationship with Christ through Bible study, prayer, and worship. Building quality believers so that they can experience God in a more intimate way.”  I am thankful that there are people reading my messages, but what’s more important to me than anything else is that you are reading your own Bibles.  That you are developing study habits of your own.  That’s the heart of this ministry.  That’s why we offer free copies of the Our Daily Bread Devotional magazine in addition to posting messages with all the scriptures we use to support our messages.

We believe that the Bible is the absolute authority for everything, and we need it, and we must study it, and get it into our hearts.  I was in the United States Marine Corps, and let me tell you that you don’t ever want to go into a battle unarmed because you will not win.  Can you imagine what would happen to our troops if we showed up in Iraq without guns?  So why in the world do we attempt to fight the wiles of the devil with our own will, our own means, and our own wit?  Do you not know that weapons the devil uses to fight with are far superior to ours?  Do you not know that using our intellect and understanding to fight the devil is like bringing a knife to a gun fight, and worse…showing up for a battle unarmed.

No, friends we need to be firmly grounded and rooted in the Word of God.  I guess there are several of you who maybe needed to hear this exhortation to study your Bibles because I haven’t even been able to get into the real message yet.  So, please, friends…take time to study your Bibles.  If you don’t know where to start then email me, message me, call me, or text me your contact information, and I will mail you a copy of the Our Daily Bread Devotional.  It’s my own personal favorite bible study tool.  I’ve used it for over 20 years.  It is of vital…VITAL importance that we spend time each day meditating upon the Word of God…it just is…and I hope that above everything you read in today’s message if you take away anything from today’s message…please take away from it that you and I need to be firmly grounded and rooted in the Word of God…especially in this day and age where the Word of God, Christian values, and Biblical principles are under attack from every direction…studying the Bible is absolutely critical to fighting the good fight of faith.

So…get out your Bibles…dust them off…and if you need help knowing what to start go under the “Where to find us” section, write down our contact information, and get a hold of me so I can send you the Our Daily Bread Devotional.  I have 25 copies to send, and I can get more.  So don’t be afraid to humble yourself, and ask us to send us a very useful bible study resource.

Today’s Message:

I feel like I just gave today’s message, but I know there’s much more that the Lord has to say to us today, and therefore let’s get right into this.  In fact, before I start let’s just take a moment to pray…

Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus, and I ask that You would take over, and allow me to write only by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.  Let Your Word be magnified and glorified.  May You get the glory and honor through this message this day.  I pray that You would make my fingers that of a pen of a ready writer…only writing the oracles of You, writing through the supernatural ability in which You supply by the Holy Ghost.  I pray You give the readers ears to hear what the Holy Spirit would say to them, and that You would again be glorified by this message.  I ask this in Jesus name…Amen.

So, let’s get into today’s message shall we?

If you are going to win the battle of the mind and defeat your enemy, where you focus your attention is crucial. The more you meditate on God’s Word, the stronger you’ll become and the more easily you’ll win the victories.

Too many Christians don’t realize the difference between meditating on the Bible and reading the Bible. They like to think that when they read God’s Word, they’re absorbing the deep things of God. Those who meditate on God’s Word are those who think–and think seriously–about what they’re reading.

Yes, indeed friends there is a huge difference between studying and meditating upon the Word of God, and just reading the Bible like any other book.  I chose to kind of study the Bible like I used to study out of my text books in school.  I have notebooks full of notes from different things I study from.  I have a notebook that’s dedicated to just Our Daily Bread messages that I take notes on.  I have a couple of notebooks for church services one for Wednesday nights and one for Sunday’s.  That way if there’s something I want to study out further from a message I have it.  I always write down the scriptures given in support of the message that’s being preached.  This is what I mean when I talk about studying the Bible.  Just like we had to study in school for answers to tests that were coming up that would grade us based upon the knowledge me retained…in life we are always going to come up against trials, tests, and temptations that will be used to test our knowledge of the Word of God.

How many of you know what it’s like to fail a test in school?  Usually we failed a test in school because we didn’t fully have the knowledge of what the test was on.  Don’t you know that we fail tests in life because we don’t know how to apply scriptures to the tests in our lives…the difference is there aren’t any open book tests in life, and life doesn’t ever grade us on a curve.  If we fail in school there’s opportunities to retake the test sometimes, but when we fail in life sometimes there’s only one opportunity to pass that test…and if we fail it…there are usually major consequences to the failure of that test…isn’t there?

So, it’s great that you read your Bible everyone needs to read it, but it’s vital that we study and meditate upon the Word of God.  Why?  Because when you look at Ephesians 6:10-18…which is about the Armor of God…do you not ever take the time to notice we have one weapon of offense?  The rest of the Armor is designed to protect us in the spiritual battle, but only the Word of God (the Sword of the Spirit) is the offensive weapon.  I know you’re probably going to say:  “Isn’t prayer an offensive weapon?”.  Yes, that’s true it is…but what are you going to pray if you don’t know the Word of God?  Prayer is very much an offensive weapon, but the Word of God is the ammunition for that weapon.

In today’s scripture I quoted from Psalm 1. This psalm begins by defining the person who is blessed, and then points out the right actions of that person. The psalmist wrote that those who meditate–and do it day and night–are like productive trees…and everything they do shall prosper.

The psalmist made it quite clear that meditating on God’s Word brings results. As you ponder who God is and what He’s saying to you, you’ll grow. It’s really that simple. If you read about and allow your mind to focus on God’s love and power, that’s what operates in you.

All of the scriptures we have in today’s message say the same theme.  That is meditating upon God’s Word brings results. Let’s look again at Joshua 1:8; “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Meditating upon God’s Word day and night shall make our way prosperous, and will bring us good success.  Is that not what it says?  As we study God’s Word it leads us to really understand who God is, why Jesus was necessary, who we are in Christ, what we have in Christ, and how we can use this knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to prosper and have good success in our daily walk with God.  I love what Joyce writes here that if we read and allow our mind to focus on God’s love and power…then that’s what is going to operate in our lives.  On the other hand, if we allow our mind to focus on situations, circumstances, and the lies of the devil then that is going to be what operates in us.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of focusing on all the wrong things, and receiving all the wrong results.  I’m tired of having  my life stolen, killed, and destroyed by the lies of the devil.  I’m ready to have my mind totally renewed and transformed by the Word of God (Romans 12:1-2).  I am ready to know what the Bible says so that I can use the Word of God to fight off the lies of the devil, and have better results in my life.  The only way to get to and receive the abundant life is to make sure that God’s Word does not depart from our lives, our mouths, and our thoughts.  I’m not saying we need to take ever waking moment to study God’s Word, but it is important that we do take time everyday to turn off everything around us and focus on reading the Word of God.

One good thing to do…especially when we’re sleeping…is to find away to have an audio version of the Bible read.  Not only does that make the atmosphere more peaceful to aid us in sleeping, but our minds are awake and being fed the Word of God.  I can tell you that there is a difference when I wake up in the morning or after a nap if I haven’t had some kind of worship music, some kind of good biblical teaching, or just the word of God playing while I’m sleeping.  There have been many times I’ve woken up with a song on my mind or in my heart…and that’s what is meant by meditating upon God’s Word.  It’s important to get it into us every opportunity we have available to us.

With listening to it while going to sleep…it may take some getting used to, but eventually it does become background noise.  However, it’s much better than background noise because it really does help to feed your spirit, and it really does help you go to sleep and wake up in a much more peaceful way.

Conclusion & Prayer:

Be careful what you think about. The more you think about good things, the better your life will seem. The more you think about Jesus Christ and the principles He taught, the more you become like Jesus and the stronger you grow. And as you grow, you win the battle for your mind.

I hope you know that I write this to help you, and not to heap condemnation on you.  I agree whole heartedly that it’s of vital importance that we know the Word of God.  Especially in this day and age where…as I’ve said already…the Bible is under attack from all sides.  It’s under attack from our government, it’s under attack from the world, and sadly it’s also under attack from preachers who are supposed to adhere to and preach the principles in it.

We are most definitely living in those perilous times that Paul told Timothy about in 2 Timothy 3:1-5.  We are in the last days, but the key to staying rooted is by getting more passionate and serious about studying our Bibles.  How in the world can we stand up against those who are coming against the Bible if we don’t know what’s in it?

So, I hope that if you get nothing else from today’s message you get the understanding that just reading your bible along with these messages aren’t enough.  Meditating upon something requires time, and really digging into it.  Think back to the days that you were in school like I have, and realize that we need to study the bible the same way we studied from our school books…that’s the only way we are going to know what to pray, what we believe, and how to fight the battle that’s going on not just in our minds…but in the world.

For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12 (AMP)

This verse in Hebrews came to mind as I was getting ready to close this message, and I wanted to post it so that you would know just how important to us the Word of God is…and what it does.

So…get out your Bibles, dust them off, and if you haven’t already don’t just read it…study it…and if you need help in knowing where to start please contact us with your mailing address so we can get a copy of the Our Daily Bread to you…it’s free of charge…and it’s one of my own personal favorite bible study tools.

Pray: Lord God, help me to think about the things that honor You. Fill my life with a hunger for more of You and Your Word so that in everything I may prosper. I ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Amen…fill my life with a hunger for more of You and Your Word so that in everything I may prosper.  Hallelujah!  That’s the cry of my heart.  More of You and more of Your Word.  More of a burning passion for Your Word.  In Jesus’ name…Amen!

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 9 of 14 – Positive Belief

Today’s Scripture:  “ 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” – Romans 4:18-21

Introduction:

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and again for all the Mother’s out there who follow Christlike Ministries Arkansas I hope your Mother’s Day was relaxing and full of blessings.  As we resume our study here I remind you that this is just a small two-week sample of what’s written in Joyce Meyer’s Battlefield of the Mind Devotional.  All of the quotations you see are from her and her book, but the commentary in between quotes is from Christlike Ministries Arkansas.

Occasionally, it’s necessary to step back from writing to take a break, and with the work week I had last week I knew that I was going to have to step back, refresh, and allow the Lord to recharge my batteries so-to-speak.  So, we have five days left of this series, and then we’ll have to see where the Lord leads us from there.

So, let’s get back into this series…and it’s a good topic to start with…Positive Belief.

Today’s Message:

The story of Abraham amazes me no matter how many times I read it. It’s not just the birth of a son when he was a hundred years old. That’s a miracle. But just as amazing is the information that he waited twenty-five years for the fulfillment of the promise. He was seventy-five when God promised Him a son.

I wonder how many of us would believe God and live in expectation for twenty-five years. Most of us probably would have said, “I didn’t really hear from God.” “Oh, I guess maybe God didn’t really mean that.” Or “I need to go somewhere else to get a fresh word from the Lord.”

I admit that I love the story of Abraham myself.  I am one of those who would have wondered if I had really heard that from God or if it was my imagination.  Yet, since I’ve been serving the Lord I realize that I was saved as a little boy, and that was over 30 years ago.  It wasn’t until 2001 that I learned that I was called to serve the Lord, and that is more than 10 years ago.  I don’t remember the exact year that Pastor Stephen Robbins of No Greater Love Family Church told me by a word of knowledge that I would one day use my ability to write for the Lord, but I’m relatively certain that was more than 5 years ago.

What’s my point?  What’s Joyce’s point?  In one message we talked about God’s Timing and God’s Perfect Plan, and one of the things I remember saying is something that Pastor Robbins used to say all the time.  God doesn’t grade on a curve.  In other words, you won’t go on to the next step or level until you complete the level the Lord gives you.

When you read the bible you see how there was always years before people walked in their calling, and one of the encouraging things to me when I read Abraham’s story is that for me…this is just the beginning of what God’s called me to do.  Writing these messages is just the beginning.  I can’t even begin to imagine what would’ve happened if Abraham didn’t believe God.  It’s also encouraging to know that between the time God spoke to Abraham about a son, and the birth of Isaac was the birth of Ishmael.  He tried to speed up the process, but it wasn’t until he had Isaac that the promise of a son…with Sarah was fulfilled.

For twenty-five years the man once known as Abram began to introduce himself as Abraham the father of many nations.  I can imagine how many people probably laughed and scoffed at him.  He didn’t even have one son, and he was running around calling himself “the father of many nations”…but that is exactly what faith is.  Faith as calling things that be not as though they are.  Today, all of us who have confessed Christ as Lord and Savior are children of who…father Abraham.  We are all blessed and are heirs to the promise of the what…Abrahamic covenant.

That’s what the point is.  God’s timing is always reliable.  His plan is always perfect.  No matter if it takes 25 days or 25 years to fulfill.  That’s where we have to get to ask far as our faith goes.  We have to believe that when God speaks something to us that He is going to fulfill whatever it is.  Whether it’s having a child or having a ministry we all have to accept that there are things that God’s promised us that simply will not happen over night, but it will happen according to His perfect timing and plan.

In our impatience, we often take matters into our own hands. I say we get “bright ideas”–plans of our own, which we hope God will bless. These plans open the door for confusion and chaos. Then their results must be dealt with, which often delays our miracle.

This is impatience or a desire to “help God out” is how Ishmael came to be, and instead of being a blessing Ishmael became such a problem that he’s still a problem for Christians today…because from Ishmael’s lineage came the Muslim religion.  We know how that’s turned out.  Christians and Muslims and Jews have been at war with each other ever since.  I know there have been many a time in my life that I thought I would “help God out” or speed up the process of what He was wanting me to do only to find out that God doesn’t need us to help Him to bring anything to pass in our lives…He needs us to trust Him to complete the work on His time.  Remember  Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV) that reads:  “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”, how about  2 Timothy 1:9 which says:  “who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,” and Philippians 1:6 (NKJV)that reminds us:  “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”

It’s God who begins and completes the work in us.  We just get to take part in the process.  He’s the Author and Finisher, He is the Beginning and the End, and the Alpha and Omega, and there’s no point in us trying to “help God out” because the simple truth is…He doesn’t want our help He wants us to be obedient.

The Bible gives us promises, hope, and encouragement. God promises good to those of us who serve Him. Despite the adversity of our circumstances–and some people have absolutely terrible situations–God still promises good. Our sense of goodness, however, may not be the same as God’s. Getting what we want immediately may not be best for us. Sometimes waiting is the best thing because it helps develop the character of God in us.

It takes time to develop the character of God, and some times we’re just going to have to accept that we’re not going to receive certain promises over night…but over time.  You know, I thought that I’d have the abundant life promised in John 10:10 immediately, but don’t you know it’s taken 38 years for me to receive that abundant life…and I still have yet to receive it in it’s fullness?  I have had the Lord promise me that there is a “promised land”.  However, I believe it’s also worth mentioning that when He spoke to me of my own personal “promised land” He let me know that there was my own personal land of giants that I was going to have to go through to get there.  That was back in 2005.  It’s seven years later, and I can still see the promised land ahead of me…but there are still a few giants that I have to defeat to get there.  The awesome part to that was that He also told me that I wouldn’t be fighting those giants alone.

The Lord chooses to do good to us and to make us happy; the devil chooses to do wrong and to make us miserable. We can remain patient and keep believing God’s promises, or we can allow the evil one’s whisper to fill our ears and lead us astray.

There lies the reason we feel like we need to “help God”.  Don’t you know that was the lie that satan used to seduce Eve with the fruit of the tree?  He got her to believe that somehow God was holding out on them by not allowing them to eat of the fruit from that tree.  I believe that had they waited that eventually God would’ve given them the knowledge from that tree.  Do you know that Satan’s lie is still the same today?  Satan’s lies haven’t changed they still are used to get us to believe God doesn’t really love us, He’s holding out, or God’s never going to fulfill what He promised us.  That is really the arsenal of the devil…lies and deceit…and the truth of the matter is that he only has the power that we give him because Jesus stripped the devil of all his power.

That’s why this Battlefield of the Mind study is so important because the majority of his attacks come through our mind.  If he can get us distracted and thinking about anything other than God…then he’s done what he’s wanted to do.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve listened to Satan’s lies long enough.  My Jesus out satan to an open shame just like they used to do in the old days.  When a king defeated a king of another kingdom, the losing king would be stripped and often mocked in an open parade of victory for the victorious king…that’s what Jesus did to satan.

Conclusion & Prayer:

Positive belief in God’s promises yields good results because the Good One sends them to us. Refuse to give up, and you will see the results of your positive belief.

It’s about faith really.  I’m not really into this positive thinking stuff because that’s kind of what got Joel Osteen off, and if you’re wondering at all we do not support Joel Osteen at all.  He is a liar straight out of the pit of hell, and I have the video’s to prove it.  I’m not going to get on to this soap box, but I’m just going to say that what yields the results of the promises of God is faith.

Look either we believe the Bible or we don’t.  I choose to think of the Bible as God’s Word.  I don’t about you, but when I read that God is not a man that He should lie…then when I read the Bible I am going to read it knowing that this is God’s Word…and His word is truth.  PERIOD.  So, when God speaks a promise to me, and it’s confirmed in the Word of God…then I know that what God spoke to me is going to happen.

I have to admit that I really am kind of envious of Abraham because he believed God long before there ever was a Bible.  He didn’t have the Word of God like we have it today.  All he had was a word from God, and that was enough for him to walk around for 25 years that he was no longer Abram, but Abraham the father of many nations.  There’s been billions of people born since then…and I would think that would barely cover the grain of sand on any beach in the world…but God promised that his descendants would be like the grains of sand or stars in the sky…in other word…there wouldn’t ever really be a number.

Pray: Dear Father in heaven, forgive my lack of belief. Forgive me for allowing Satan to deceive me or make me think I’m worthless or unworthy of Your miracles. I am worthy because You made me worthy. You are the God of the impossible, and I ask You to help me wait on You and never give up. In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord, I pray. Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 8 of 14 – Getting What We Want

Today’s Scripture:  “5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

Introduction:

Today we come to one of the most well-known set of scriptures in the Bible.  Just about anyone who is a Christian who has a fairly workable knowledge of Scripture can at the very least paraphrase Proverbs 3:5-6.  Getting what we want from the Lord has conditions to it, but few are willing to actually do what it takes in order for us to actually get things from the Lord…because we always want what we want from the Lord on our terms and not His.  Oh, am I the only one who has figured that out?  That can be a cause and trap for the devil to work in our lives because when we are seeking the Lord for something that we want, and it’s not happening…the first one to make sure we notice what we’re asking for isn’t happening is the devil.  It’s here when we may be tempted to listen when he says that if God really loved or cared for us wouldn’t we have exactly what WE wanted exactly when WE wanted it.  Isn’t that how he got Adam and Eve to take a bite of the fruit from the only tree in the garden God said not to eat from.  He convinced Eve that God was holding out on them because of the beauty and thrill.

There’s a phrase that I once saw that I really like when it comes to the devil because he is always willing to give us exactly what we want when we want it because he is interested in making sure our gratification is instant.  The phrase:  “Satan will always give you the thrill without giving you a bill.”  So, as we continue to walk through this short sample of Joyce Meyer’s Battlefield of the Mind devotional let’s see how our scriptures for today apply to what we’ve been studying.

Today’s Message:

I usually know what I want, and I like to get it. I’m exactly like most people. When we don’t get what we want, our negative feelings flare up.

Too often, we Christians expect life to be perfect and for everything to go smoothly for us. We expect success, happiness, joy, peace, and everything else. When we’re thwarted, we pout or complain.

We all have a pretty good idea of the things we want, and am aware that the only way I’ll receive some of them is by the grace and mercy of God…but the catch is I have to wait for His timing and when my wants line up with that perfect plan for my life-like we talked about yesterday.  I am also honest enough to admit that there are times when I want something, and when I don’t get it when I think God should give it to me or bless me with it…I am guilty of pouting too.

You know what?  One thing I’ve learned since stepping over from just being a believer into working in ministry is that I’ve learned just how fake and inauthentic some in the body of Christ really are.  Isn’t that the truth?  They never admit to pouting or being impatient with God, they’re always just like “whatever You want Lord”…like their perfect little angels…have you ever met those kinds of Christians or am I the only one?  You can almost hear the deceit as they talk about how great life is, and how free and easy things are for them.  Well I guess I’m glad for them, but either I’m just not mature enough to be in a place like that or I don’t live in a world with rose-colored glasses…and I certainly don’t pretend that everything in my life is hunky dory.

There are times that I find I can be like the Israelites who one moment are worshipping and all excited about the journey and what God is doing, and then there are times I can be like them as they murmur and complain about how God’s not meeting their needs and life in Egypt was so much better than life in the wilderness.  Am I the only one who can freely admit I can be like them?

Although God does want us to have a good life, there will be times when we must be patient and endure not getting our way. These disappointments test our character and level of spiritual maturity. They actually show whether or not we truly are ready for promotion.

I can be transparent to admit that there are times I’ve whined to God about how I know He came to give us and “abundant life”, but it sure didn’t look like I was the recipient of that abundant life.  Why?  Because it didn’t look like I thought the abundant life should look like.  I thought the abundant life meant all of my needs would be met, that I wouldn’t be in lack or want for anything, and all the material things would be there.  Love, work, money, shelter, and the list went on and on.

I had this picture of what the abundant life was supposed to look at from…can I honestly say it…the prosperity message that’s invaded the body of Christ.  I concluded that I must not have enough faith or be blessed enough because my picture of the abundant life was clearly not what I was seeing.  However, now that I’m much more mature in my Christian walk I realize that I really have the abundant life that God promised me I’d have.

I have a wonderful home life, a beautiful woman for a wife, I have a decent job where I make an alright living, I have a roof over my head, food in my stomach (probably too much since I’ve gone from a size 32 waist to a size 36), and while I still don’t have the exact picture of the abundant life I had…I realize that I have the abundant life that I was promised…and let me be honest enough to say the Promised Land God promised me is better than the one I pictured.

God has truly blessed my socks off, and I’m not in need for anything at all these days.  There are things I want like more money from my job, but I understand that to get there I need to perform my job as though I’m doing it for the Lord and not the paycheck.  I’ve begun to treat this job as though it’s not just a job, but my company.  I realize that God’s going to eventually honor what I do because I’m doing it for Him.  I know promotion is going to come, but it’s going to come when the time is right and it fits into HIS perfect plan for my life.

I would like a nicer vehicle, but for now I’m going to have to be content with the one I have.  My wife and I would like to have our own home, but now before we get there we have debt we need to pay down and finances that we need to get a godly handle on.  So, we took Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University through our church, and now we’re still working on baby steps 1 and 2.  We’re having to work and live like no one else now so that one day we will be able to LIVE like no one else.  We also have to get ourselves to a place where we’re trusting of God with our finances to tithe because it’s the right thing to do, and I believe once we begin to do that faithfully we’ll reach another level of promotion.

I’m the same way when it comes to my ministry.  We have just now for the first time reached the 30 followers plateau on our Facebook page.  Now, I understand that if I really want my page to be legit I need 200 plus.  So, by my count that means we need at least 170 more followers to visit, check it out, and like our Facebook fan page.  Don’t you know that the devil has used that to discourage me, and I’ve allowed it to get me frustrated.  I’ve even had one of my pastor’s give me a word of knowledge for the Lord that my ministry will grow…but not at the speed I want it to.

I still have yet to go through the Discipleship Track through my church which is one of the things I need to do to follow along the path that God has set before me.  I still have yet to be able to order and begin the Ordination and Licensing through World Christianship Ministries…another one of the steps I need to take before my ministry grows, I’m legally a pastor, and I can get the charter to legally register my ministry.  So, there are steps that I still need to take and follow before I get where I want to go…and since God doesn’t grade on a curve…promotion isn’t going to come until He directs it into my life.

The secret of the Christian life is that we commit ourselves fully to God. If we surrender our wills to God, what happens doesn’t make us angry. If God doesn’t give us what we want and ask for, our faith is strong enough to say, “Not my will, but Yours.”

These are the things that slowly, but methodically God is teaching me.  Surrender and Faith are the keys to everything in the Kingdom of God.  However, I’m not going to pretend that I’m always good at coming to the “not my will, but Yours” conclusion.  I still find that I can murmur and complain just like anyone else, but that’s just because the flesh is weak and wants what it wants when it wants it.

One day at a time I’m getting closer to becoming the man who God’s always designed and destined for me to be.  In my ministry is where I find today is the place where I have more of a struggle to believe I’ll get where I’m trying to go, but it’s still up to me to realize that it’s not about my will and my timing and my plan.  God spoke to me at the beginning of the year, and gave me a detailed outline of what this year was going to be about, and again through that same pastor that gave me the word of knowledge this year.

God said that my development as a pastor this year was going to go along the lines of my church’s mission statement.  Seeking God…Loving People…Making Disciples.  I’m going to reach and get to where I want to go, but it’s not going to happen any faster than God’s plan and timing demands.  The Discipleship track is going to take about 6 months, the ordination is going to take anywhere from a year to two years to complete, and so what I have to be mature enough to understand is that this is just the beginning.

However, in the mean time I am doing exactly what God wants me to do, and how He wants me to do it.  This is exactly what I’m supposed to do with my ministry.  The Social Network sites are my mission field, and this is how I’m supposed to reach people.  Growth will come, people will come, and eventually this will become a full-time ministry.  But now, I have to walk exactly how God wants me to walk…one step at a time, and just like the Israelites I am not always good at being patient.  However, I have a much more mature understanding today, and that helps me to complain less and less…and praise more and more because I know in my heart that I’m on the road to getting and becoming all that God has designed for me to become…and the fulfillment of His purpose and will for my life comes as I put Proverbs 3:5-6 in to practice on a daily basis.

Conclusion & Prayer:

Why do we think we should always be first? Why do we think we are entitled to the perfect life? Perhaps sometimes we think more highly of ourselves than we ought. A humble mind enables us to take a back seat and wait for God to move us to the front. God’s Word says that we inherit the promises through faith and patience. Believing God is good, but can we continue to believe God and trust Him when we don’t feel that life is fair?

There is a shrinking in me that’s taking place…especially since I began this fast about setting aside some of the worldly interests that have overtaken my desire to be in the presence of God.  I had turned certain things into idols, and while He has no issue with me having those interests the issue He does have is that they were becoming more important than spending time in His Word, in His presence, and as a result I was challenged by a message my pastor taught this past Sunday.

Life isn’t fair, but it’s much better when we’re walking in God’s presence.  It took me being humble and honest to realize that I’d placed things above Him, and it took obedience to His voice to know that I needed to lay those things aside for a while.  It started out being kind of difficult, but now that I’ve spent the last few days reacquainting myself with His presence I realize that it’s all worth while.

Now, I’m starting to come to the place where I realize that I really don’t need those things, and that I need to remember that they’re there strictly for entertainment value and they have no eternal value.  I’m also finding that being in God’s presence is just as fun and entertaining as watching television, playing games on the computer, and listening to nothing but praise and worship music or sermons on the radio is much more beneficial to me.

The peace of God’s presence has invaded my life, and I realize what a joy and honor it is to have it…and how easy it is to take it for granted.

Pray: God, help me. I often have strong desires, and when I don’t get what I want, I get upset. Forgive me. Remind me that Jesus didn’t want to die on the cross, but He lived in total submission to Your will. I ask You, through Jesus Christ, to help me live in total submission and be content with what You give me. Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 7 of 14 – A Perfect Plan

Today’s Scripture:

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” – Philippians 1:6

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10

Introduction:

We”re half way through our series taken from a short sample of Joyce Meyer’s “Battlefield of the Mind Devotional, and I have to say that it’s been a joy and privilege to learn from such an anointed woman of God.  I know that I’ve grown in the first week of messages, and I’m looking forward to learning more.  Today’s message is titled:  A Perfect Plan.  A couple of day’s ago I wrote from a Our Daily Bread message about God’s Timing, and I think that can be linked to today’s message because God’s Timing is always exact, and it’s always part of God’s plan and design for our lives.  God’s Timing is exact, and His plan is always perfect.  So, let’s see what we can learn today about what makes God’s plan…A Perfect Plan.

Today’s Message:

What does it mean to think that God has a perfect plan for us? -

Have you ever been like me, and heard someone say “God’s plan is always perfect.” while you were in the midst of something that didn’t seem to agree with that statement?  Maybe yesterday’s message kind of ties into what we’re talking about today because it’s usually when we’re in the midst of struggles when someone we come across makes that declaration that God’s plan and timing is always perfect.  So, you think in your mind or maybe you even say to them…don’t you know what I’m going through?  Perhaps I’m the only one who has ever been here, but I’m going to go out on a limb to suggest there are many of you who know exactly what I’m talking about.

So, what exactly does it mean to think that has a perfect plan for us?  What exactly does it mean that God’s timing is always perfect?  Why is His plan and timing always perfect, and ours wrong?  Oh, maybe I’m the only one who asked that last question there…how come my plans and my plans never right?

Perhaps it’s the word “perfect” that troubles us. We’re fallible and make so many mistakes. How could anything be perfect in our lives? We know ourselves too well. Immediately we think of our shortcomings and shake our heads.

That’s a trick of Satan! The plan isn’t perfect because we’re perfect; the plan is perfect because God is perfect. God has a special plan for each of our lives.

I would tend to agree here that part of the thing that troubles us is the word “perfect” when it comes to God’s timing and plans for our lives.  After all, the only thing that’s really perfect is God, right?  I mean we are fallible, and He is infallible.  We are unholy, and He is holy.  We are sinful, and He is sinless.  So, how in the world can anything about us or our lives be perfect?  I mean I miss God on a daily basis.  I’m always needing to adjust my priorities in life because I allow things to become unbalanced, and place things of the world before Him.  So…how can anything be perfect in our lives?

Remember that question I asked a minute ago about why our timing, and plans aren’t perfect?  The reason is the only thing perfect about us is that we’re in Christ, and we are not.  So, that’s really a simple answer to a complex question that we’re never really going to know the answer to until we can ask Jesus in person.  I know that’s one question I might actually want to ask Him.  Why it was that I couldn’t ever do anything right on my own, and something tells me His answer is going to be just what He said in John 15…you couldn’t do anything right because apart from Me you can do nothing.

“The plan or timing isn’t perfect because we’re perfect; the plan and timing is perfect because God is perfect.  What should happen because of the perfection of God is the humility to understand that, and realize that Proverbs 3:5-6 is written to help us to understand that when God directs our paths, our steps, and ultimately our lives…it’s not perfect because we are, but because God is.  His plan, His time, His direction, and His leadings are always right.  You know how people who believe or speak out that “there aren’t any absolutes in life”?  That’s wrong.  There is One  who is Absolute…His name is Jesus.  He’s absolutely holy, absolutely perfect, and absolutely right 100% of the time.

There’s never a time when God is wrong, there’s never a time when God isn’t holy, there’s never a time when God isn’t perfect, and there is never a time when God is going to fall short, fail, or make a mistake.  You aren’t a mistake…and the best way to avoid making more mistakes than you’d like to is to make sure that we’re acknowledging and leaning upon God in all things.  I know that’s much easier said than done, but that’s how we’re supposed to live this Christian life of ours.

Do you know that’s why I believe we’re so stressed out?  I have to be honest, and say that when my life is in line with God’s timing, God’s plan, God’s direction, and guidance it’s much less stressful.  There’s always going to be tests, trials, temptations, and situations that arise whether we’re walking in God’s perfect plan or not.  Like I said yesterday, God never promised us a difficulty free life, but He did promise that whether we’re walking through still waters or the valley of the shadow of death…He would walk through it with us…and He even promises that sometimes He will carry us through…but the key to that is whether it’s good or bad…relying upon Him.  Again, I realize that’s much easier said than done, but the key to a restful life is bringing our burdens to Him in exchange for His.  (Matthew 11:28-30)

Let’s think about that plan. In Philippians 1:6, Paul told us that God saved us and started a good work in us. Paul also wrote, in Ephesians 2:10, that we are God’s handiwork (or workmanship). The two verses before that tell us that we’re saved by God’s grace. We have nothing to do with the act of salvation–we haven’t earned it or deserved it. We are born into the kingdom of God as a gift.

The first part of God’s perfect plan is our salvation like we read about here, and in Philippians 1:6, Ephesians 2:8-10.  When we came to Christ we became new creations.  Before we even came to salvation God already had a perfect plan for our lives, and once we accepted His Son as Lord and Savior of our lives He begins to work out of us that plan.  People get weird when you talk about predestination, but really if you read the Bible what it says is that God is all-knowing.  Like we talked about yesterday God’s not boxed in by time because He is time.  So, since He is time He knows what the absolute perfect plan is for our lives because He knows it from beginning to end.

I believe that before we ever come into existence God has a plan for our lives, but because He gave us free will we have the ability to choose our way or His.  If you don’t believe that take a look at Adam and Eve’s relationship with God before the fall.  If you ever want a picture of what God’s perfect plan for our lives is we need look no further than the beginning of the Bible.  God’s desire, and perfect plan is to walk with each and every one of us in the cool of the day just like He did with Adam and Eve.

However, when faced with a choice to live by God’s Word, or believe that God was holding out on them prompted Adam and Eve to make the greatest mistake the world has ever seen…they chose their own will over the will of God.  Ever since then not only did they pay for their mistakes, but so do we.  We come into this world as sinners because of their choice to do things their way instead of following God’s plan…and that’s exactly what we do today.  We make horrible choices, and decisions based upon what we think is perfect and right for our lives.  We choose to live like Frank Sinatra’s way, and not God’s.

Yes, for a time or season our way may seem to be working, but in the end our best laid plans seem to fall apart at the seams.  I suppose I’m the only one who has come to the conclusion that my plans just don’t ever seem to work out as good as the ones God has for me.  But, yes, friends, the picture of God’s perfect will and plan is seen before the fall.

God’s plan was never for us to taste death, destruction, and disease.  God’s plan was never for us to be separated from Him, and to not have a perfect relationship with Him.  His plan was perfect…it was man who screwed it up, and that’s why our world is in the state that it’s in today…man has chosen their own desires, their own lusts, and their own plan.  We go through life doing things our way, and then when life turns out to not be as wonderful as we thought it should…we point the finger at God and blame Him for the results we’re reaping from our choices, our decisions, and our plans…that we made without Him.

I understand that there are things that happen that are beyond our control because of the state of the fallen world we live in.  However, for the things that we’ve done in our lives that we are reaping a harvest off of…I think it’s long overdue that we stop pointing and shaking our finger at God, and look in the mirror at the person responsible putting the blame where it belongs…on us.  I’m just as guilty at finger-pointing at God as anyone else, but the more I learn the more I realize that it’s my fault for the harvest I’m reaping.  I was the one who sowed the seeds of the flesh, and the Bible says that if we sow to the flesh we’ll reap corruption.

As soon as we say, “But wait! I’m not perfect! I fail,” we have taken our attention off God and allowed Satan to distract us with wrong thinking. Our loving Lord pleads with us to turn our minds and hearts fully over to Him. The more fully we do that, the more completely we live by His good and perfect plan.

One of the things that I find to be just awesome is that it was God who came to Adam and Eve after they fell, and sought them out.  One of the things I like about the story of the Prodigal son is that God’s always standing on the porch watching down the driveway of our lives for us to come walking up the road, and do you not know that we don’t even have to get to the driveway before He begins to run to us?  The moment the king saw his son…he ran to him.  The moment we take a step towards God…He runs to us.  There’s an old song by Phillips, Craig, and Dean that says:

Mercy came running
Like a prisoner set free
Past all my failures to the point of my need
When the sin that I carried
Was all I could see
And when I could not reach mercy
Mercy came running to me

I like the part that says:  “When the sin I carried was all I could see, and when I could not reach mercy…Mercy came running to me…past all my failures to the point of my need.”  Oh that we would get these words in our hearts, minds, and spirits.  God sees past our faults, our sins, our failures, and all the way to the point of our needs.  We are not perfect, but He is.  When all we can see is where we’ve been our focus is in the wrong place, and we’ve allowed our mess to distract us from what God wants to do in our lives.  When we are conscious of where we’ve been, and not where God’s taking us that’s when we begin to find ourselves in that spiritual lull.

God came to set us free from the prison of our past, and there was a time when the Lord finally got me to break free from dwelling on what happened yesterday.  I still look back today, but it’s because I’m able to see where I was without God…and now I’m able to see just how far He’s taken me.  I never could’ve gotten to the point where I am today looking at where I was, and dwelling on my past.

I don’t feel worthy to be able to write like I do for the Lord, and the truth is I’m not.  I’m not worthy to be used by the Lord, but He had a plan…a perfect plan for my life.  Going all the way back to the beginning of this message is the understanding that I am not perfect, but I serve the One who is.  I’ve been recreated by the One who is perfect, and each day I step toward Him I am walking more in line with that perfect plan.

It’s really quite simple.  When I do things my way, on my time-table, and according to my plan…while it may not be horrible…it’s not perfect.  When I do things God’s way, on His time-table, and according to His plan…it is perfect.  I didn’t say it was eventless.  I didn’t say that I don’t still face trials, tests, temptations, and even persecution because I do.  However, what’s happened is that I understand those things are in my life to buffet me, and for God to demonstrate His power in my life…when I choose to submit and surrender to His will, His time, and His plan.

The plan isn’t perfect because we’re perfect; the plan is perfect because God is perfect. God has a special plan for each of our lives.

Conclusion & Prayer:

As we think about God at work in us, we remind ourselves that God is perfection. Nothing we can ever do would be good enough to satisfy God’s perfection. Only Jesus, the Perfect One, is good enough. Nothing but our faith in Him makes us acceptable to God.

Knowing that He’s the One who is responsible for perfection takes a lot of the stress, strain, and work out of it for me.  I say all the time that I’m not perfect…I’m being perfected…and that helps to elevate the pressure of trying to become something I cannot be…the perfection I have is because my faith isn’t in my perfection, but the perfection I have because of Jesus.

Pray: Perfect God, help me in this battle for my mind. Satan constantly reminds me of my imperfections and my weaknesses, but I ask You to remind me of Your perfection, Your love, and Your closeness so that I can always walk in victory. I ask these things through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 6 of 14 – First the Suffering

Today’s Scripture:  “ But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.” – 1 Peter 5:10

Introduction:

Why does God allow suffering?  I mean we’re supposed to be His children, He supposedly loves us so much, and if that’s really the truth than why in the world to we have to go through so much stuff?  If He’s love why suffering, sickness, disease, and all the garbage we see going on in the world?

I’m not sure if this message is going to answer these questions, but I know that we all have them from time to time.  It’s hard not to take a good look at this fallen world we live in, and wonder if there really is a loving God why He allows all this to happen.  The truth is that not everything in this world is His fault.  There IS a ruler of this age, and while God is in charge…the one thing He’s not in charge of is man’s own free will.

Man’s own free will, free choices, and desires have taken this world generation after generation into the abyss in which we seem to be heading into at an alarming rate of speed.  Especially here in America.  The problem isn’t God…it’s man.  Maybe one day the Lord will enable me to write a message to go down that road, but that day isn’t today.  I just have one last thing to say about this, and while it’s probably not going to be popular…I’m not interested in being popular…I’m interested in being Biblically correct…the condition this world is in has everything to do with the choices that men and women in political positions have made to turn their backs upon the very God that this nation was founded upon…and in truth…the world ought to be much…much more grateful that we Christians are still here.

There’s going to come a day when there will be a husband and wife lying next to one another.  One of them is going to disappear, and the other is going to be left wondering where they went.  There’s going to come a day when two people are walking along a path one moment, and in a blink of an eye…there will be one.  That day is quickly approaching…and since we cannot depend on anyone else to get their hearts right with God…it’s absolutely of critical importance that YOUR heart and MINE is right with God…because quickly approaching is the day of the rapture…and you can think that this rapture thing is a good story or some made up figment of someone’s imagination…but if your one of those that scoffs at the idea of a trumpet sounding and the dead and alive in Christ rising together…don’t be surprised that your one of the ones left here to wonder where everyone went…I can tell you exactly where we went…we went to be with Jesus in the very rapture that you scoffed at.

I don’t know who or what that was for…but apparently the Lord needed me to get that out before we got into today’s message.

Today’s Message:

“Why do we have to suffer?” “If God truly loves us, why do all the bad things happen to us?” I hear such questions often. For years, people have wrestled with those questions, and they still haven’t discovered the answers. I don’t even try to answer the questions. I do make one comment, however: “If God only blessed us after we became believers–if He took away all suffering, hardship, and turmoil for Christians–wouldn’t it be a way to bribe people into the faith?” – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

The age-old question is here in this devotional before I even got to reading about what I was going to be writing about.  Joyce answers this question just about the same way that I believe it needs to be answered.

That’s not the way God works. The Lord wants us to come to Him out of love and because we know we’re needy–so needy that only He can fill those needs for us.

The reality is that from the time of birth until we go home to be with Jesus, we will suffer at times. Some have harder tasks than others, but suffering is still suffering. – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

God doesn’t work that way.   He never promised that life would be easy.  He promised that we would not have to face life alone…IF…we choose to walk through it with Him.  That’s really the key here, friends is to make the choice to walk with God…like Enoch did.  If He was going to take all of our suffering, trials, and hardships away there would be no use for a verse like Romans 8:28 (KJV): “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Listen this verse says that He would cause all things to work together for good…He never said that all things would be good.  That’s the problem with the body of Christ.  Everyone thinks that now that they’re saved life is supposed to be a cake walk.  But is that Biblical?  Not really.  Jesus said there were certain things that would come.  Things like trials, persecutions, and tests.  He didn’t say that they might come our way…He said they would, and I would like to add that if you aren’t experiencing those things in your life…then you may want to find out how far you are from walking with God…and take the necessary steps back to Him.  Remember this statement…if your feeling distant from God…He didn’t move…YOU did.

I also think that when people watch us as we turn to God for help in our hardships and they see our victories, it provides a witness to them. That witness may not always make them turn to Christ, but it does show God’s presence in our lives and makes them aware of what they’re missing. – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

That’s right, fellow believers.  The world is watching us to see how we react to trials, tests, temptations, persecutions, and the down right ugly things this world has to offer us.  The world is watching to see how we’re going to treat that person that cut in front of us at the check out counter.  The world is watching to see what kind of stuff your watching on your television or listening to on your iPod.  I’m not saying that it’s wrong to have 3 Doors Down in your music choice I have three of their CD’s, but I am saying that the world is watching to see what’s important to you.  That’s part of the reason for the fast I’m doing.  I want the world to see that while I like some of the things the world has to offer…I don’t want them to take priority or importance in my life…because in all reality while they do have entertainment value…they have no eternal value.

The ability to overcome trials, tests, temptations, and so forth also become a platform from which we are able to give a lost and dying world a testimony.  Not just with our words, but our actions.  Let me also add that if you don’t display a genuine love for people they will have no interest in you or your relationship with Jesus.  The world will care about hearing from you only when they know that you care about them.  That’s a bit of free advice, and for someone.  I don’t know who I’m talking to today…maybe I’m preaching to myself…but I’m definitely writing this with purpose for someone…or maybe it’s multiple people.

Let me just say this really quickly…if you came to this page looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear…you came to the wrong ministry.  I’m not about playing church.  I’m not about tickling ears.  I am about being honest, and delivering authentic messages.  I hope that they are full of truth spoken in love.

The other day I had a new thought: Suffering results in thanksgiving. When our lives turn chaotic and we don’t know what to do, we turn to the Lord for help, and He answers our prayers and sets us free. God speaks to us and comforts us. And the result is that we’re thankful. – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

I love what Joyce writes here.  Suffering results in Thanksgiving.  When we turn to Him in the midst of the mess, He answers us, and we see the result of what He does with the mess…and with us…it’s a cause to rejoice.  Why?  Because He’s always going to bring us out of the fire in better shape than we went into it with.  Sometimes we need to go into the fire so He can burn some things off and out of our lives.  So, if your going through the fire…so did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego…and when they came out of the fire not only were they not singed, burned or smelled like smoke…they came out walking with Jesus closer than they did when they went in the fire…do you know why?  Read the story.  He was in the midst of the fire with them.

Wow!  That’s for someone too.  God wants you to know that the fire that you’re in the middle of that you’re not in it alone.  He’s with you, and when He brings you through and out of the fire…you’re going to have a deeper, stronger, more secure and intimate relationship with Him.  The fire isn’t to hurt you it’s meant to promote you…and it’s meant to burn some things out of your life that’s hindering your relationship with Him from being all that it’s meant to be.

The time between suffering and thanksgiving is when the devil truly attacks our thoughts. He may begin by saying, “If God really loved you, you would not have to go through this.” The truth is, we’ll have problems if we’re believers; we’ll have problems if we’re non believers. But as believers, we’ll also have victories. As believers in Jesus Christ, we can have peace in the midst of the storm. We can enjoy our lives during the hardships because we truly believe that God is working on our behalf to bring deliverance. – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Conclusion and Prayer:

I don’t know who is going to read this message today, but this is the first time I’ve had a sense that I’m speaking to someone.  Maybe I’m speaking this message to myself, but that’s not important.  What is important is that you know…again…that fire you’re in the midst of right now isn’t meant to hurt you but promote you…and when you walk out of the fire you’re going to come out of it with a much deeper and greater understanding.  You’re going to have a stronger, more secure, and more intimate relationship with God.  He’s there…in the fire with you…and you’re going to come out of it stronger than you did when you went in.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this message as much as I enjoyed writing it.  I’m thankful for the Lord speaking through me to someone today.  I thank the Lord for all of you known and unknown that read these messages, and pray that you’re being blessed and challenged and encouraged by them.  I pray that you find from God whatever it is you need to find from them, and I only ask that if you find these messages to your liking that you share them with your friends.  There’s never a charge for our messages, there is no copy write.  I’ve received these things freely from the Lord, and I give them out just as freely as I received them.

Pray: My Master and my God, forgive me for always wanting an easy life. I admit that I don’t want to suffer, and I don’t like it when things go wrong. But I ask You to help me have a good attitude and to trust You to bring good out of it. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

God’s Timing – May 7, 2012 — by Dave Branon

Read: Exodus 13:17-22

Key Verse:  For every matter there is a time and judgment. —Ecclesiastes 8:6

God’s timetable may move slowly, but it does move surely.

It’s of no surprise to me that on a day when I’ve decided to shut off some of the things that have become more important to me than God’s presence the very first message back into my daily series of messages that come from the Our Daily Bread Devotional Publication is on God’s Timing.  It’s clear to me that the timing of the latest series introduced to us by Pastor Cass Hill of New Life Christian Center in Centerton, Arkansas has issued a personal challenge to me about what I place a premium on.  The new series is titled “Family Ties”, but in the process of introducing the series to us with the first message from it came the questions that challenged my heart.  How important to me is the presence of God?  How much of a premium do I place on spending time with God?  I had to honestly answer those questions with not enough.

At the beginning of the year, the Lord gave me my theme for this year, and it was Being Serious About Being Serious With God.  The whole point of that theme for 2012 in my life is that it’s time to grow up, and be serious about my relationship with God.  It’s also time for me to be serious about being in fellowship with God, seeking His face, being in His presence, and learning how to be a more effective minister, pastor, husband, and leader of my family.

Pastor Audley Black’s church near the south coast of Jamaica has been in a building program since at least 2005. That was the first time I visited his church and saw that they were expanding. The last time I was there—in the spring of 2011—some of the walls were up. By that summer, they had started on the roof. When I suggested to Pastor Black that perhaps the church would be done by 2013 when I thought I might return, he said it was a possibility.

There was no hint of disappointment that this project could take 8 years or longer! No, Pastor Black and his people are excited about what God is doing, and they’re patient with His timing.

We are often not that patient. We want our church to grow quickly, our young people to mature right away, and our problems to be fixed today. – by Dave Branon

Waiting on God’s timing isn’t always easy is it?  I don’t know maybe I’m just not as super spiritual as you are, but as far as I’m concerned waiting on God is often more trying then some of the trials I’ve gone through.  I just wrote a message yesterday about not growing weary, and in it explaining the age-old principle that works in all walks of life.  This principle is always present whether you’re a Christian or an atheist or an agnostic.  What is this principle?  Seed…Time…Harvest.

Seed…Time…Harvest

When you think of farming.  I’ve yet to ever see a farmer who plants a seed for corn one day, and the next he harvests a corn-stalk full of ears of corn.  Have you ever seen that?  If you have let me know because I’d like to witness that for myself.  What’s my point?  Usually after the ground thaws from winter the farmer goes out to  till his fields.  Then he goes out to plant the seeds for whatever crop he wants to harvest.  Then he spends months cultivating the seeds he’s planted by weeding, watering, and fertilizing his seeds.  Then just before fall it’s time to harvest the crops.  However, the seeds he planted take about 6 months or so to fully produce.  What do you suppose would happen if it’s May and he has yet to see anything even coming up out of the ground.  So, he gets angry and impatient, and goes and pulls up all the seeds he’s planted.

First of all, all he’s going to harvest are weeds, barely grown seeds, and all that time he spent tilling the ground and planting those seeds is going to be wasted.  Secondly, if he’d have just waited until about July he would’ve seen the growth of his crops not only starting, but maturing.  Finally, had he waited all the way to September he would’ve been able to harvest a fully mature crop.

What’s my point?  This is how we treat God.  We ask Him for something, and if we don’t see results the next day we get all upset and disappointed and quit on God saying that this God stuff just doesn’t work.  The biggest area that people fail in is time.  It’s easy to plant the seed of faith, and ask God for something.  It’s easy to reap the harvest, and be grateful that you’ve received a reward from the seed you’ve planted, but it’s not so easy to wait on God especially if He doesn’t give you what you want right away…is it?

I’ve been praying for years that my mom would accept Christ as her savior.  I’m 38 years old, and she’s 63.  I’ve been praying for her for most of my life.  She’s still not quite willing to accept that she’s valuable to God, and that she’s under no condemnation from Him.  She still has yet to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.  It’s very easy to get discouraged sometimes, and wonder if God’s ever going to answer that prayer…but I don’t.  I have the faith that some day she’s going to accept Christ into her heart.  That is seed…time…and harvest.  There’s no harvest on my seed now, but that doesn’t mean I give up…it means I keep on cultivating the seed.  I continue to water it, I continue to pull the weeds, and I continue to be patient, and wait for the God’s Timing.

If I get upset with God, get impatient, and decide I’m just not going to pray for my mom anymore…than I’m going to reap a harvest of impatience and all that time I’ve spent cultivating the seed of prayer that my mom will accept Christ as her Savior is going to amount to nothing.  I don’t want that to happen…so I’m going to continue to be patient and wait for the day that she accepts Christ as her Savior.

Maybe we need to be reminded that some things take time—God’s time. For instance, when the Israelites first left Egypt, God sent them on the long route to the Promised Land (Ex. 13:17-18). During that time He prepared them, taught them, and challenged them. – by Dave Branon

God is not obligated or limited to our time frame.  In fact, God is not even able to be boxed in by time because He created it.  He is Alpha and Omega, He’s the beginning and the end, and therefore when we talk about waiting on God’s timing really we have no bearing or influence upon how quickly or how long it take Him to answer a prayer of our.  We have no influence upon how long it takes Him to help us to grow or mature in areas because He knows how long it’s going to take for things to be absolutely perfect…and only He knows that.

In our microwave world, we want everything done instantaneously. But sometimes that’s not God’s plan. Let’s seek God’s help and learn to accept His timing. – by Dave Branon

I can be honest and admit that I have to ask God all the time to help me to be patient, and to help me to wait on His timing for certain things.  I had to do that while I was unemployed.  I knew that God had an open door waiting for me, and it was always easy to get discouraged.  God’s timing may move much more slowly than I’d like, but the truth is He is always on time.  Everything that happens on His timing is always perfect, it’s always right, and it’s never too late or too early…God is always on time.

New Day, New You – Day 1 of 14 – Willpower: The Fair-weather Friend

Today‘s Scripture(s):  “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

Introduction:

I thought I was done writing for the day, but the Holy Spirit has been gentle and methodical about keeping the thought on my heart that there was more for me to do today.  So, when I started writing messages I started by writing message not just for my ministry page, but taking time to do my own personal devotion…and writing messages on my own personal Facebook account about my own personal devotional…and I have a sense that the Lord wants me to go back to doing just that.

So, as I searched YouVersion for something else to do in addition to what I’m posting on Christlike Ministries Arkansas…I found another two-week mini-series from one of Joyce Meyer‘s devotional books.  So, I thought since I was doing one for Christlike Ministries Arkansas I could do a different one here.  After all, I need to spend time in God‘s Word, and be fed just like anyone else.

So, I hope you’ll follow along with me as I attempt to draw closer to God, and like I did with the other devotional I’m going to allow Joyce to introduce this devotional that I’m about to begin.

It’s so important how you spend those first thoughts of your day – spending just even a few minutes every morning with God is your opportunity to get off on the right foot and set a positive tone. New Day, New You gives you that opportunity. In this exciting devotional, compiled from several of Joyce’s most popular books, you’ll experience a fresh word from God for each day of the year. Before you take on the challenges that life may bring, start each day with encouragement and strength, reminders of God’s mercies, and God’s perspective. Become the new you that each new day can bring! – From the book New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. Copyright 2007 by Joyce Meyer. Published by FaithWords. All rights reserved

Today’s Message:

Now, I know what you’re going to say already.  How come your writing this closer to the end of the day than the beginning, and to that the only answer I can give is that I just now came to the understanding that I had more to write about, and while I realize this is a devotion for the start of a day…this is actually more about returning to the theme for this year that God gave me…Being Serious About Being Serious With God…and I think what this is really about is that it’s a new month, and it’s full of new opportunities for me to be renewed, transformed, and be ministered to while I minister God’s Word.

So, let’s look at today’s message.  The title of it is; “Willpower: The Fair-Weathered Friend”.  As a diehard sports fan of the Chicago White Sox, and the writer of a Facebook page that’s dedicated to White Sox fans…one of the biggest pet peeves I have are the people who I like to call Fair-Weather, Bandwagon Riding fans.  But don’t you know that when it comes to walking with God our own personal Willpower is just the same?  Our own willpower can be a strange thing can’t it.  Some days it seems like we do really well with the things we struggle with, and then there are other days where we just can’t seem to do anything right of our own strength.  Anyone other than myself ever been here?

Well, the reason for that is that we’re not meant to do things of our own power.  We’re meant to rely and be totally submitted, surrendered, and dependent upon God in every area of our lives.  However, if we’re honest…most of you are a lot like me.  Give me some time, and maybe I can prove that we’re more alike than you think.

Willpower sure sounds like a great thing. We are led to believe that we have enough of it to fight off every temptation that comes our way. And sometimes it works. But let me tell you a little secret about willpower. Willpower is your best friend when things go well, but it’s the first friend to check out when you get weary. I have found that if I really don’t want to do something, my mind gives me plenty of reasons why I don’t have to. My emotions even join in, saying, “I agree because I don’t feel like doing it anyway.” – From the book New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. Copyright 2007 by Joyce Meyer. Published by FaithWords. Okay, let’s see how super spiritual, or honest you guys are.  Has anyone other than me ever had the thought that we really “just don’t want to go into work today”?  Come on, let’s be real.  I know I’m not the only one who desires to play hooky from work once in a while.  We know we’re not sick, but what happens when we come up with that thought is sort of good way to illustrate what happens when our willpower checks out.

Since I’m the only one who’s ever done something like this let me give you an idea of how this scenario plays out.  It’s the first thing in the morning, and you wake up a little more groggy than you’d have liked to.  You haven’t prayed yet, you haven’t even had your first cup of coffee yet…so in pops this thought of…I’d really just like to stay home today, but you get up and half heartedly begin to go about your routine of getting ready for work, but maybe a bit slower than usual.  You still haven’t prayed, you still haven’t had your first cup of coffee, and your just kind of going through the motions.  That’s when other thoughts start to come in, and you begin to have an emotional connection to those thoughts.  Thoughts like: “I really could go back to sleep now.”, “There really isn’t much to do today.”, or “I have a few things that I could get done if I were at home instead of at work.” or “It was sure nice to be cuddled up next to my wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend this morning…sure wouldn’t mind going back to bed for a while.”

Is anyone with me yet, or am I the only one who’s ever been here?  What starts to happen is amazing isn’t it?  Based on those few thoughts, and emotions that connect with those thoughts…eventually that willpower that usually gets you through the morning, and on your way to work isn’t quite as strong.  More thoughts begin to come to talk you into calling in sick, and before you know it your rehearsing an excuse to miss work, your on the phone calling in with the excuse you rehearsed, and your back in bed.  Like I said, since I’m the only one who has ever done this…I guess I’m the only one who really understands the dynamic of how this works.

However, this is exactly what happens to us on a deeper level.  Obviously playing hooky from work isn’t as serious when you think about the fact that sin works in our lives the same way.  All sin starts with a thought that comes into our minds that’s planted there by satan, and goes unchallenged.  Here’s a really good example of something that you can’t do on your own, but people try to do anyways…on their own willpower.  Quitting smoking.

I’ve known many people who have tried time and again unsuccessfully to “kick the habit”, and they all say the same thing when they go back to smoking.  I thought I could do it, but the urge was just too strong.  I didn’t have enough willpower to quit.  And most will tell you that they didn’t start going back to smoking two packs a day.  At first, they were out at a party or bar, and they were having a pretty good time.  Drinking and smoking went hand in hand, and eventually they were having a really good night…after all it’d been a few weeks (maybe even months) since their last cigarette.  So, in the name of willpower they decide that just one would be okay.  Then they have another one, and before you know it they buy a pack…and they’re back to smoking again.

What happened?  The decided to quit on their own willpower, and not rely upon God for the strength to help them quit.  I also submit that the degree of difficulty in overcoming something like smoking is linked to the amount of time you have spent smoking.  If you’ve smoked for 10 years…your going to need a lot more than a couple of weeks or so to be strong enough to not want a cigarette.  Now, I know that there are many people who asked God to deliver them of the desire to smoke, and were delivered instantly…but that’s exactly the key point.  Asking God to deliver you…not relying upon your own strength.

Our soul (mind, will, emotions) would love to run our lives, but the Bible says we are to be led by God’s Spirit. We are never instructed to be willpower-led, we are told to be Spirit-led. Willpower and discipline are important and vitally necessary to a successful life, but willpower alone won’t be enough. Determination gets you started and keeps you going for a while, but it is never enough to bring you across the finish line. Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV) says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” – From the book New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. Copyright 2007 by Joyce Meyer. You know something.  When I read about people in the Bible, and their struggles I find that I am encouraged to know that I’m not the only one who has issues.  Think about Paul for a moment.  Paul was in my mind the Christian of all Christians.  I’m talking more than Smith Wigglesworth, Martin Luther, Calvin, Charles Spurgeon…they are all mighty men of God, but Paul I believe was the Christian that we should all aspire to be like.  He knew all the law, all the commandments, and he got to see and know things that no one before or since got to know.  He had the mystery of the gospel revealed to him.  Yet, he writes a few things that I relate to.  In Romans 7 we see Paul write that he had a war in his flesh, and that he didn’t understand why he didn’t do the things he should and did the things he shouldn’t…if you have opportunity…you should read Romans 7.  In one of his letters to the Corinthians he writes that he prayed over and over that God would remove a thorn in his flesh, and that the only thing God would say to him is…”My grace is sufficient for you for My strength is made perfect in your weakness.”

What was God saying?  He’s saying that His strength is far superior to our willpower.  He’s also saying that when we reach the end of ourselves, our strength, and our abilities…then and only then can He step in…and can we be helped through HIS strength.  See, at the end of ourselves is where God begins…and that’s why you can see people who were hopelessly addicted to all sorts of things who have been delivered…and we’ll all tell you that it wasn’t our strength that helped us to overcome…it wasn’t our willpower that made us successful…it was God’s strength.  I said “we” and “our” because I know what it’s like to try to stop something under my willpower, and not be successful at it until I realized that I couldn’t do it without God’s strength.  Not really to my surprise…once I stopped trying to rely upon my strength, and surrendered my will to God…He helped me to stop.

What happens if, instead of turning first to willpower in your time of need, you turn to God instead? God releases His power into your willpower and energizes it to bring you across the finish line. Willpower does not get the credit for our success, God does. – From the book New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. Copyright 2007 by Joyce Meyer. Published by FaithWords. All rights reserved.

Here lies the real reason behind us not wanting to give up our willpower.  We want the credit.  In other words, the reason we don’t want to surrender, and admit that we cannot do something in our own strength is because we’re too prideful to get out-of-the-way.  We want to get the credit for stopping on our own, but the truth is that God shares His glory with no one.

Jesus said in John 15:5 (AMP), “Apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.” This is one of the most important and most difficult lessons we must learn if we want to enjoy the life Jesus died to give us. – From the book New Day, New You by Joyce Meyer. Copyright 2007 by Joyce Meyer. Published by FaithWords. All rights reserved.

And here it is.  Jesus said in His own words:  “Apart from Me you can do nothing”, but He also said:  “With God all things are possible.”  There’s a reason He said this…because it’s true.  I know the illustration about playing hooky from work is silly, but do you know that I’ve actually had to ask God to help me overcome thoughts like that sometimes?  The point is that if I need God’s help to overcome something silly like getting up and going to work…even when I don’t feel like it…then when it comes to bigger matters…then there’s no way that under my willpower I can do things without Him…and just like Joyce writes.  The key to overcoming things in life is not just coming to realize that, but when things arise instead of relying upon willpower…getting out of the way, and surrendering to God’s.

Willpower is no match or substitute for God’s power.

Battlefield of the Mind Devotional – Day 5 of 14 – "I Can’t Help It!"

Study Scripture:  “ I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” – Deuteronomy 30:19

Introduction:

We’re now 5 days into this 14 day trial of Joyce Meyer’s Battlefield of the Mind Devotional book, and I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed this series.   I hope that you have enjoyed it, and learned from these messages like I have.  So, today’s message is titled “I Can’t Help It”, and I’m really interested to find out what this one is all about, and how I can apply it to my life.   So, let’s see what we can learn today about winning the fight on the Battlefield of The Mind.

Today’s Message

When God begins to deal with us about wrong behavior, it’s easy enough to say, “I can’t help it,” but it takes real courage and faith to say, “I’m ready to take responsibility and get my life straightened out.” – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

Sometimes it’s a joy to know that God is dealing with us about stuff, and sometimes it’s not so much of a joy is it?  It kind of depends on what God’s dealing with us about isn’t it?  If He’s dealing with us on something that we dislike about ourselves it’s a lot easier to agree with God that we need to get rid of what He’s dealing with us about.  However, if it’s something that we’re comfortable with, and something that appeals to our flesh it’s much harder to agree with God that it needs to go…isn’t it?  I know, you’re probably super spiritual, and no matter what God is dealing with you over you agree with God 100% of the time.  Well, if that’s you, then I’m assuming this message isn’t going to be for you.  However, if you’re like me, and you don’t always agree with God about things He’s wanting to remove then this message is probably going to be for us.

“Much of our thinking is habitual. If we regularly think about God and good things, godly thoughts become natural. Thousands of thoughts flow through our minds every day. We may feel we have no control, but we do. Although we don’t have to use any effort to think wrong thoughts, we have to use much effort to think good thoughts. As we begin to make changes, we will have to fight a battle.

Our mind is the battlefield, and Satan‘s primary way of initiating his evil plan for us is through our thoughts. If we feel we have no power over our thoughts, Satan will entrap and defeat us. Instead, we can determine to think in godly ways.” – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

I’m going back in time today for a moment when I was part of the Living-free Program when I was a resident at the Kenosha County Detention Center.  Don’t judge.  I’m sure none of you found the Lord while you were in jail, or some other kind of institution right?  Anyways, the main program facilitator used to always say; “Thoughts lead to feelings, feelings lead to actions, and actions lead to consequences.”  It’s a program way of saying the same thing that Jesus says when He tells us what’s in our hearts will come forth from our mouths.  It’s the same thing the writer of the Proverb; “As a man thinks in his heart…so is he.”.  It is also a way to remind us that we reap what we sow.

When we allow thoughts to go unchallenged by the Word of God that’s when our troubles begin.  Our thoughts are going to go through one of two filters.  It’s either going to be filtered by the Word of God, or it’s going to be filtered through the flesh.  What happens to our thoughts depends upon which filter our thoughts go through.  If most of our thoughts are filtered by the flesh…then we’re most likely going to do something carnal because our flesh is at war with our spirit.  Our flesh doesn’t want to do anything according to the will or Word of God.  So, when thoughts and feelings are filtered through the flesh…the end result is something pleasing to our flesh.  If our thoughts are filtered through the Word of God…the end result is something pleasing to God.

Remember Paul’s battle in Romans 7?  That’s really what today’s message is about.  It’s about helping us to find victory like Paul did when he was at war between his flesh, and his spirit.  It’s worth pointing out here that this battle isn’t an external battle (remember Ephesians 6:10-18), but it’s very much an internal battle…and the winner of that battle is going to be what ever is strongest.  If you feed your flesh more than your flesh is more likely to win the battle.  If you feed your spirit more than your spirit is more likely to win the battle…so which one are you feeding?

God has given us the power to decide–to choose right thinking over wrong. But once we make that choice, we must continue to choose right thoughts. It’s not a once-and-for-all decision, but it does get easier. The more we fill our lives with reading the Bible, prayer, praise, and fellowship with other believers, the easier it is for us to continue choosing right thoughts. – Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. It’s of vital importance today to shut off ESPN, and turn on TBN or Daystar or The Word Network.  It is of vital importance that we put down the daily newspaper, and pick up our dusty Bibles to start meditating upon God’s Word.  It’s of vital importance sometimes to turn off secular music, and turn on worship music or radio sermons.  It’s of vital importance to get rid of all the distractions, and take time to fellowship with God.  All of these things are of vital importance to us as believers…especially in today’s world.

I’m guilty as anyone of wanting to watch ESPN, and not the latest message by Charles Stanley.  It’s easy to want to listen to sports talk, and not listen to worship music or a good sermon.  It’s easy to get busy, and lessen the premium of spending time in fellowship with God.  I am guilty of doing all of this as recently as the last couple of weeks.  It’s very easy to get sidetracked, distracted, and bombarded by the cares of the world.  That’s exactly what satan wants…he wants our focus and attention divided, and he certainly doesn’t want it to be on godly things.

There is a decision-making process here like Joyce says.  The decision about what is more important the stuff you like, or spending time with the Lord.  Can I tell you that I don’t always make the right decision either?  I just told you that there are times I’m more interested in what’s on CBS.  There are times that I’d rather be lazy and watch television.  However, when I choose to do those things I’m feeding my flesh, and I’m neglecting the thing that’s really of utmost importance…fellowship with God…and more specifically God’s presence.

I was challenged in my spirit yesterday as my pastor taught the first message in a new series, and the question that challenged me is am I placing enough importance on being in the presence of God.  I had to answer no.  I had to be honest to admit that I was in one of those lulls where watching television was more important that studying the Word of God.  So, I was faced with a choice, and the one I made was to fast from television, sports radio, and secular music for 21 days…and replace all of it with spending more time in the presence of God.

Conclusion & Prayer:

Today, I am beginning a 21 day fast from all the stuff I just mentioned, and replacing it with things that will enable me to have a deeper relationship with God.  I’m turning off the television, and turning on God.  I’m turning off sports talk, and turning on sermons and worship music.  I’m turning off the meaningless games on Facebook, and writing more messages.  I would like to invite you to join me in shutting off the worldly distractions, and replacing it with things that are going to strengthen our walk with God…and more importantly keep us in His presence.

I’m certainly not going to judge you whether you do this or not.  I’m just inviting you to do this along with me if you feel like I do that you’ve placed worldly stuff before the Lord, and it’s distracting you from having the kind of relationship with God that you’d like to have.  I know that it’s impacting my ability to make decisions, and have right thoughts of my own.  It’s time to shut out the garbage, and allow the things of God to cleanse my system.

It takes time to learn to choose good and push away evil. It won’t be easy, but we’re moving in the right direction every time we take responsibility and make the right choices. Battlefield of the Mind Devotional by Joyce Meyer. Copyright © 2005 by Joyce Meyer

I don’t know about you, but I want to make sure that I’m not placing more of an emphasis on the world than the presence of God.  That’s the reason for this fast from television, sports talk, and the games on Facebook.  I don’t want anything to be more important to me than my relationship with the Lord, and when I notice that things are more important…I need to set those things aside…and get back to the basics of life.

Pray: Powerful God, remind me that I can and do make choices every day. Please help me to monitor my thoughts, choosing only those that will help me overcome the devil and win the battle for my mind. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
